newbie post - 1993 964 C4 on with VIN of RS America
New post from a relatively new 1993 C4 owner ... stock with a few minor mods, 70 K miles, runs beautifully and has been maintained flawlessly by 3 previous owners with extensive paperwork.
Interestingly, the registration papers along with the matching VIN number has this car listed as a RS America. It is clearly a C4, with decklid emblem, AWD, and clearly no RS hardware.
I would love to have an RSA and I'm willing to perform some modifications to start the changeover. I realize this may be difficult with AWD, but does anyone have any suggestions on what to do first to start the process? Im thinking this would certainly increase the car's value, since it is identified by VIN as an RSA.
Any suggestions welcome.

This is a rather interesting situation. Do the VIN numbers match throughout the car such as on the door sill, door, hood and fender stickers?
I would head over to RSAmerica.net and get in touch with Keith V and see what information he could provide on this VIN number as he may be a great resource in this area.

How did you determine that the VIN was that of an RSA? I seem to recall that some of the services such as carfax, or those that insurance companies use will list all 1993 911s as RSAs.

Registration documents, even insurance documents, can say all kinds of things - doesn't mean they're right! My insurance used to say my 1992 C4 Cabrio was an American Roadster.

My USA Cup is also listed as an America Roadster by my insurance company...the key for you is if your car does not have a "1" as the thirteen digit in the VIN, if not it is not an RSA.

Check your VIN against this:
http://www.rsamerica.net/faqs/index.htm#10
How do I read the Vin# of an RS America?
A sample RSA Vin# would be
WPOAB2968PS419312
The first 3 digits are the World manufacturers code. WPO = Porsche.
The 4th digit is the body code where A = coupe, B = Targa and C = Cabriolet.
The 5th digit is the engine variant code B = USA & Canada only.
The 6th digit is the passenger restraint system where 0 = seatbelts, 2 = airbag
The 7th & 8th digits are the first two digits of the model designation (e.g. 964).
The 9th digit is the check character which is randomly generated from 0 - 9 OR the letter X
The 10th digit is the model year where “P” = model year 1993 and “R” = model year 1994.
The 11th digit is always an “S” for RS Americas because it the plant of origin i.e. Stuttgart.
The 12th digit is the last digit of the model designation when combined with digits 7 & 8 (e.g. 964).
The 13th digit is the code for the body 1 = RS America, 2 = US Coupe with airbags, 4 = US Targa with airbag and 6 = US Cabriolet with airbag
The last 4 digits are the serial number of the car as detailed below.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For RSAs built Jan '92 to Jun '92 the serial numbers are 8001 - 8297 [Total 297]
PLEASE NOTE: Although these cars were built in 1992 they were 1993 model year so on their option codes on the bottom of the ID label under the front hood (or in the first page of the maintenance manual) they carry “718” which means “Next years model”.
For these cars the 10th digit in the Vin # is a “P” (see above).
VIN number checked....
Based on the VIN code, it is not an RSA, so I guess the registration bureau simply has the classification wrong. Sounds like im not the only one with the issue.
I appreciate being welcomed into your forum, as i am truly enamored by my 'new' C4 and plan to learn a lot from you all.
A couple of other things i was thinking about, if anyone has any advice.
I would like a more aggressive look to my front spoiler, and im thinking about a body kit from 'betterbodiesUSA'.... anyone have any experience with that outfit?? Which rear spoiler will look best on a narrow body 964. Will this destroy the value of a stock 964??
