It does look like fun for sure.
Both the popular classes in PRC are the toyo cup spec's (pre '89 cars) and the GTL (goodyear slick, 993 bodied dudes), both those classes look like fun, but again, I think I want to go a bit more modern (cause I do the work myself generally these days). I see Tom working to loose weight with the 964 tub.

what's wrong with your current 964? too nice to cut up or you want to get RWD.

Ken,
By crate motor, I meant purchasing one from Porsche directly. Is that what you meant? I would assume that a new motor from Porsche is essentially a proper motor. Bad assumption?
Thanks for the offer on the motors. I was not thinking about going that far in terms of a 'build', more like just the mods for the track. But if it comes down to it maybe.
Perhaps I should have omitted the 20k number. It's not really all about the 20k number, I just want a good track candidate. I don't want to waste $$ on paint condition, or tire wear or seat wear, that kind of thing. See my point?

In any case, a fresh (or nearly so) top end for a racer will be nice to have. Other mods? Last thing you need is more power. I'll say it again: RSA #1 ran 100% as it left the factory, minus the secondary muffler (yes, including the cat). And it was good for 2:03's @ Thunderhill. (Shocks, springs, RS bars, brake pads, and Hoosiers were the only deviations from as-delivered. I also opted to run it at 2750 as it was a factory a/c delete car.)

here is a nice completed RSA:

It's a finished car and a lot more money, but when you start adding up the costs of building a $20k beater....

It looks like a nice car, but I want to build myself. If I was going to buy any built car at the moment it would be Jim B's car.

A really cool car to have would be the lightweight RSA, as Ken described above. If you could buy a C2, install a manual rack and then get the weight down to 2,760 lbs, I think you'd have a pretty nice track car and one which you could sell, if necessary, for some decent coin.
Keep in mind, as a stock class car, you can't use camber plates, aftermarket chip, 8:32 r&p, a wing, big brakes or strip out the interior (no bare metal). So it's actually a relatively ecnomical build and a really hot car for PCA racing. Whatever you do, make sure you know the rules cold before proceeding. Cage and seat requirements vary by racing orgs, so do the homework--it'll pay off in the end.

Good advice Joey.
I will be trying to target as much as possible. But without a exact series/class in mind, I still have some homework to do.
I think RSA's are overvalued for race cars. Installing a manual rack, and removing weight costs a fraction of the difference of the C2 vs RSA. RSA's are not that much lighter. Plus, since RSA's are limited in numbers, let's keep those as pristine cars!
I can't believe no comments from Tom or Garrett. I am so bummed!
