Default WTB 964 c2 for track project

I am deciding between a 996 3.4 and a 964 for my next track project. Anyone got a 964 they know of for sale?

I am looking for:
- c2 coupe
- good motor condition, low miles/top end done, etc.
- white preferred (black/silver ok too)
- black interior preferred (sport seats a plus)
- have cash in hand, I want sub 20k price. salvage title ok.

all else does not matter much as it will get stripped.

The C4 will go to weekend/friday duty and the new car will get a cage/race prep. Yes, I want to build it myself. ;-).

-kg

If Jim Newman's car is still available, I'd be all over it if I were you.
White & Burgundy C2

Sure, Kenny, the interior color is not what you're looking for BUT it's got everything else! History, maintenance, LSD and solid engine. You could do a lot worse.

Too bad about the C2. Any thoughts on going with an early 911, i.e. SC? If so, you might want to give this discussion a read: F or G Class Car Debate

The thing is, there are not a lot of great 964's for <$20K. There was one, locally, with an LSD, beautiful silver paint, Motons, Recaros, recent rebuild ... asking $30K. I think C2 enthusiasts know how much they can ask for a good example.

Now, here's a nice deal from the PCA Mart. For $19.5k, you can get a 1982 SC, white/blue, with 120K miles on the clock and the following:
Getty RSA fiberglass rear spoiler,4pt roll bar, Recaro SRD/Pole Position seats,G-Force harnesses, Brey Kraus fire extinguisher, Momo steering wheel, I/O Port roll bar camera mount. All new engine seals, recent compression leak down test, heat backdated, pop off valve, turbo valve covers, rebuilt distributor, new Wevo engine mounts, new OEM Sport transmission mounts, new Wevo shifter with PSJ coupler, B&B muffler with gutted cats, rebuilt transmission with new Sachs aluminum clutch, new half shafts, freshly rebuilt calipers with stainless steel flex lines, BHP street/track brake pads, new cross drilled rotors.21/28 TB’s with spare 23/30 torsion bars, Carrera/Turbo 21/22mm sway bars, new Bilstein Sports, new turbo tie rod ends with bump steer kit, Cambermeister front strut brace, 7" & new 9" Fuch wheels with brand new Toyo RA-1’s 225/50/16 245/45/16 tires. Freshly aligned and corner balanced. No accidents/never raced.

Wow, huh? And for a little more dough, there's a G50 3.2 with a Peter Dawe rebuild and plenty of upgrades--but it's red.

Do you mean low miles OR top end job?

Sub $20k may be possible in these pre-recessionary times but difficult unless as you offer, a salvage title.

FWIW- I bought 2 x 964s this year; one with high miles and no top end job for sub-$20k and the second with high miles with top end job for over $20k - you should be familiar with the latter! For what I ended up with, I'd say the former was the better buy, but time will tell.

Not sure if this helps but just got this in an email. Looks lightly damaged and can be had for probably much less than your talking. Scroll about half way down.

In terms of 20k, I am trying to be optimistic. I have budget for over that, clearly a 996 is at least mid-20's. Frankly the case 996 vs 964 is a tough one... a beat to snot 99 996 can be had for mid 20's, and a new crate motor is about the same as a top end job for a 964 3.6. Hard to compete with. But I have a soft spot for the 964's (plus I already know all about them, or at least more than the 996).

Joey, sorry I am not interested in going back to F or G. Mainly because I want a 964 or newer platform (just personal preference). They are awesome cars, just not for me.

Cobalt good link, thx.

I have two cars for sale that might interest you. 1980 V1 POC race car complete with 95 993 engine and a rebuilt 915 w LSD. Car is cosmetically challenged but has a complete 993 fiberglass body already installed. Safety devices roll cage Speedline 17" 3 piece wheels and complete race suspension.
The bad -- motor has a slight knocking sound on off throttle - possible a rod bearing starting to go.

$15000 as it sits and should give you enough room to freshen up the motor. please email for pictures and further discussions. 805-498-7261 Jim

or
1993 C2 Salvage title no motor or transmission -- ready to be a race car. it is black
roller here is what it is missing - driver side fender, headlights, tail lights, front bumper cover, front seats.
$5500

I have decided to restore a 1965 Mercedes 300SE and need to get space, plus these need to go to a good home that will love and enjoy.

No sweat, Kenny. Those newer cars are hard to knock. Just trying to help you stretch that track budget.

Kinda tough to find any 3.6 car with serious engine refurbishing in that price range. One thing I posed on some thread re: 3.4 crate engines. How are they screwed together? By that, I mean I've taken apart 2 or 3 Porsche factory reman'd engines back in the '80's. One, a 2.4, had mains .10 under and rods .20 under (I think, maybe it was the other way around). Anyway, want to throw something that you have no clue about what's really inside into a track car?

Just a thought--I've got 2 964 3.6 cores, if you find a cheap high miler and want to have at building something from scratch maybe we can work it out.

Ken,
By crate motor, I meant purchasing one from Porsche directly. Is that what you meant? I would assume that a new motor from Porsche is essentially a proper motor. Bad assumption?

Thanks for the offer on the motors. I was not thinking about going that far in terms of a 'build', more like just the mods for the track. But if it comes down to it maybe.

Perhaps I should have omitted the 20k number. It's not really all about the 20k number, I just want a good track candidate. I don't want to waste $$ on paint condition, or tire wear or seat wear, that kind of thing. See my point?

I will continue running DE and TT's. I am also going to dip my feet into the water with ARC ( http://www.amracing.org/classification.html ) in the GT-2 class. Essentially I am targeting PCA 'D' class, but likely will never run with PCA (since they don't have a big presence out west here). It depends from there how things go, but at least I will have a safe proper cage.

Hey if you want to check out my C2 racecar project sometime, shoot me a PM. Not that you need it but I'll share my build sheet/plan and expenses, and some cost-cutting things I've done so far.
