Oil change question

Oil change question
I did my first oil change this week end. All went well. I followed the DIY and that explained everything very well. My only issue that I would like some other opinions on is when it comes to taking off the oil filter. I went with the “put a hole in it” method. I pierced it with a nail and then moved up to a medium sized phillips screw driver. I then let it drain for about 20 minutes. No oil was dripping out of the tank of pan at this point. Maybe I didn’t wait long enough but when I removed the filter I still got a mess of oil pouring out. Is this normal? Do I need to wait longer? How much oil will still come out when the filter is removed? Any way to keep it cleaner? Thanks.

Thats strange because after putting a piece of tape over the hole mine drips very little when taking it off. I assume you poked the hole before opening the oil tank drain? You dont need a very big hole just enough to let a suction happen. I still put paper towels under the filter to catch the last drips.

I agree w/Springer3.
I just get that oil absorbing fabric to put around the filter and put the oil drain pan under the car and let r go. I have a rag and replacement filter ready to go in. I take off the old, clean around where the filter goes, and quickly put in the new filter.
So far I haven't gotten on the drive way, and that's after dozens of oil changes.
One question I would like to add to this thread:
When I'm filling it back with new oil, it gets VERY slow after the 1st 5 qts. is in. So I start the car to pour in the remainder of the oil. My theory is that once I start the car, the oil's leaving the tank and entering the engine, thereby leaving more space in the tank for more oil. Mind you, I do this very quickly, adding the next 5+ qts. in about 30-45 seconds. is this a good idea?
