From 1989-1992 the factory used (synthetic) Shell and then starting in MY93 they switched to Mobil 1 but still placed the Shell sticker on the ignition wire cover.

As Bill mentions above, Mobil 1 changed the additives in the 15-50 oil. The race shop that maintains my car no longer recommends it as the reduced additives lead to increased rod bearing wear. I've been instructed to use Red Line in my car. (We found excessive bearing wear after only 15-20 hours on my motor when the M1 15-50 was used.)

I would have stuck with Mobil 1 15W-50 had they not changed their formulation. I'm NOT going to be a guinea pig. Supposedly they've increased Zn and P levels in 15W-50 back to a more respectable level, but the problem I had was finding out WHICH version of the oil had it. For example, if I go to some store and buy some, how do I know it hasn't been sitting on the shelf for 6 months? When is the "new" Mobil 1 going to be released. I saw nothing that indicated any change on any of the Mobil 1's I've seen on store shelves.
I hope this story is over blown, because it seems incredibly irresponsible for some oil companies to be releasing products that might damage engines (not to mention, hard to believe).
