Colin,
I have bothered you regarding the billet heads repeatedly already. So I am happy to hear that us 964 owners do not need to fit new heads.
Do you have an exhaust system that you can recommend together with your intake set up?
Thanks!

Talk about wanting blood? Give 'em a little and they want the earth!

Actually you are just ahead of me - the new prototype 9m header set is already in test on my 993RS and we have just finished re-working it onto our 964 Cup car. I will be collecting Kermit either Friday or Monday. Key features? Made entirely from high grade argon purged welded stainless steel, adjustable length (500 to 650mm primaries), merge collector, twin silencers and optional twin outlet or single right and point-down left for the Q-car look. Will also fit 964 or 993 simply with a change of cross-over pipe and silencer brackets.

I did not want to mention the exhaust until it was done, so I'll start a new thread once I can take proper photos.

Colin,
do you see the saliva on her lips?

Will the combination of intake and exhaust manifold be "streetable"?

Colin - well that is a good idea, and may work for some of the northern members. But, Geoffrey is still some 1000 plus miles away - but reading into your comments " a top-end rebuild, heads porting, build it back up with a 9m Sport cam/spring/retainer package and then fit the new 9m Motec kit" The top end rebuild is easy, porting can be done via a local speed shop - can we obtain the cam, springs and retainers from 9M Sports (yes). It appears the issue is setting up the 9M Motec kit - How complicated is this to do ?? What do you need? Besides the obvious knowledge that you have developed - could a local Porsche speed shop set this or could Geoffrey talk us through this process -?? Geoffrey _ ??

So the engine will be nicely run-in then by the time you get it back home?

Seriously, setting up Motec is not brain surgery BUT it is remarkable how many shops claim to be able to tune a system and then proceed to make the most basic of mistakes which result in an unhappy customer with a poor running car. We recently shipped a 9m built, Motec equipped & dyno mapped 993 engine to Bahrain for fitting into a 964 on the premise that the owner had a local "expert" who could fine tune the maps. Suffice to say that after he screwed up practically every table in the map, a 10 minute re-write in the UK for the customer to download and install left the customer with a car running better than ever, but I am still planning on travelling over to him in November to map the car for local conditions (45C inlet temp!).

This is why I have suggested that the first conversion is set up by the obvious Motec/964 expert who can easily fine tune my maps to suit your local fuel and air temperatures/pressures and at least I will be able to sleep at night without having to plan trips back and to across the Atlantic. Once the map is pretty much done there will be no reason why the kit could not be installed by others, but in my experience every car will need fine tuning in order to run perfectly so some intervention by a Motec specialist will be essential.

Obviously shipping the parts across the pond is not an issue.

Our "street" airbox package for the ITB's have been designed to keep the noise down, provide all-weather protection and further improve torque, so this is the obvious choice for the top of the engine. Underneath, the headers have been shamelessly designed as an adjustable primary length system for race cars and have no heat, the silencers will definitely comply with UK trackday requirements of less than 105dBa at 0.5m (aiming for 100dBa) so will be quieter than a standard engine with a cup pipe.

I run the intake and exhaust sytem on my 993RSCS which also has a superlight flywheel, have a look at the Longleat & Prescott movies on the new 9m website and you can see me in the queue from the paddock trundling the car along - it will easily pull 2nd gear on the idle map. Hence the only reason why the package would not be suitable is if the engine was not mapped correctly.

"the headers have been shamelessly designed as an adjustable primary length system for race cars and have no heat,..."

That's cruel.
I'm too old to wait for Gore's global warming. Revise, or at least provide some longjohns for each header. No forget the rear flap. :-)

We can add heat but this would compromise the balance of the primary lengths. At the moment each pipe is within 8mm of each other and each side is within 10mm of the other, however with heater boxes we will need to lower the pipes away from the cam covers to gain box clearance, so the equal lengths will suffer. This will have a minor effect of power, so for now we have just made the non-heat version to finish off our development program. More on these later.

Well, ****.

So then, the total cost for 350bhp on a 964 engine is much less than for a 993 engine? This makes me angry.

So Colin, I can easilly live with the 325 HP and 400 NM that the Motec package delivers on it's own (no head work), my problem is I live on the west coast of Canada about 3000miles from Geoffrey's shop. If I bought the package from you and then had it installed by the local Motec dealer/tuner, would you then be willing to work with him to ensure that everything was as good as if you had done this yourself. Another concern is the fuel quality where we live, most stations only carry 91 or 92 octane, Chevron does have 94, but the engine would have to be tuned for 91. At that level what sort of power can I expect ?

Regards
Steen

And here's another question I'm sure will interest many on the 993 board:

What kind of power can be achieved on a 993 with just sport cams and Motec?
