A good used crank is $4000. iirc .
The thing to do , before you decide what way to go , is pull the motor apart and check the crank out , if the crank is irreparable , that will steer you toward a replacement motor .
If you get a nice motor out of a wrecked car , get a leak down on it and do an oil test on it before you spend a penny . Don't fear used motors , all cars are running around with "used" motors .

Prestige Salvage in Leeds are probably the best in the UK . Used by all the trade !
I had a few motors from them and what you want ,you can get ! at a sensible price .
Good luck

My mechanic found a used crank in the US for about $2000 but they are getting hard to find in decent condition. These engines are all getting long in tooth. The newest 964 rolled off the line about 13 or 14 years ago so any used crank is going to have some wear. We are opting to repair/upgrade my crank instead. I'm also having the Jerry Woods rod bearings custom matched to each journal. Overkill, I know, but I plan to only ever do this once....
Another option is the 996 Cup Car crank but you have to go with different rods also. This can get kind of pricey from what I've been told.
Another thing I would count on replacing, especially if you had a bearing failure, is the oil pump. They aren't cheap. Over $1100. But if you've had metal particles circulating due to bearing delamination, the pump mating surfaces are probably worn more than you would want. Mine was border line, but I thought it would be foolish for me to put the used pump back in over a difference of $1100 for a new one and peace of mind.

Mileage is not the main factor. It's how the car has been driven, maintenance, etc. Some engines get a top end done at 40K miles, others last to 200K before being opened.
