Gauge repair/restoration in the UK
Hi all,
Just wanted to know if anyone has found/used a UK based company to restore the faces of their 964 gauges? I have searched through Rennlist but can only find USA recommendations.
My oil temp./level gauge has flakey warning lights and the odometer has that nasty crackle to the black part of the face. Spoils the whole look and I would like to get them restored. I did ask the Main Stealer for prices of new gauges, but they want £450 plus VAT...each!!!!!!
Thanks in advance,
Adam.

I have been trying to get the oil gauge ( 1 recently and another listed right now ), but the last one went for £90+ and the current one has 4 bidders and is at £55 with 4 days to go. I will keep looking but the odo. needs restoring, unless I want to change the mileage on the clock. Not a biggy, but would like to keep the odo. original if poss.

They do turn up at lesser prices, so it's probably just a case of waiting.
I can see where you're coming from on the odo - I have the same problem and don't want to swap that. Ring Reap and find out how much they charge for 2 dials. I believe their advert in 991 & PW says £265+VAT (£311) for all 5 dials. I would imagine you'd have to remove them yourself and organise postage unless you live in London, which judging by your avatar is probably not the case.

Thanks Jamie, I will give them a call as tjr suggests. I will have to post them but it looks like I can get my hands on a loaner set of gauges, so won't be without while they are being fixed.
PS that isn't my house in the avatar...my Dad's in Oxon....made a better backdrop than mine

Just an update on this old thread. I used Reap to re-finish my gauge faces. He did them twice and they are still not great. It seems that now VDO no longer supply new replacement faces, he is having them screen printed and appears to have no quality control or abiltiy to spot faults before returning them to the customer i.e. me. The flaws in the gauges have been different on both the occasions he has returned them to be as 'done':
-Needles not re-mounted correctly so that the back lighting...doesn't.
-Spots of light coming through areas that should be black.
-Blurred/mis-printed numerals.
Take the above as words of warning to anyone in the UK that is considering them for work. Maybe he is having a bad patch but, running my own business, I find this kind of shoddy quality control irritating and unacceptable, especially when one can only assume that the company was probably thinking, "That'll do...sure he won't notice". Argh!

I have just spent the evening pulling apart a spare gauge to see how it all fits; not too difficult. Think I will talk to my local screen printer, who has done some good gauge work previously that I have seen for old Jags, and get some new dials made up. Doesn't seem to be a UK alternative to Reap; perhaps he is too busy.
