Finishing touches
I ended up getting a re-manufactured starter - which looks new.
To reduce the chance of undergoing the trauma of having to monkey
around with it again I took a few extra precautions...
1) I soaked the two main retaining bolts in a rust removal solution for 48 hours.
2) I gold plated every conducting bolt, washer and terminal with 24ct gold.
3) Degreased, fine sanded and the machine polished each cable terminal.
4) Same treatment for the main body earth contact point.
Managed to get the whole lot back in without lowering the engine/trans
(struggled as much as I did getting it out).
All back... fired up first time! Yippee!
Thanks for all your support. Really appreciate it.

It's out!
Just managed to get it out without lowering gearbox or engine.
I'm quite sure that, physically, there is not enough room to remove
the starter it can only be done with a Jedi mind trick.
If it's any help to those that follow, here's a picture of the starter
and the socket arrangement.
Thanks for the claiming words Thomas.
Now... got to get a new one and put it all back.

Good as gold
The gold plating was the easiest bit. I bought a tiny bottle of the gold
solution off of eBay from this company.
I didn't bother buying the kit, I just used a 12v supply and wrapped
a positive, stainless steel probe (from a multimeter) in cotton wool - no doubt
it would be easier with the kit.
Make sure that the solution you buy is safe for home use, some have
very nasty chemicals in. Follow the safety instructions (gloves and goggles).
Here's a video.
So, when can we expect the VAS-911 'Gold Edition' ?
solution off of eBay from this company.

On another note, is the top starter bolt also the 4th fastener holding the trans to the motor? There can't be only 3 studs are there? This is the last hurdle before the trans is out and my manual doesn't show the mounting hardware.

Just wanted to give everyone a little bit of hope who will do their starter in the future..
I got the old starter out and the new one in in 1.5 hours.. Never done it before so hopefully that gives you future starter mechanics some hope on a speedy change
