Ordered my starter today... damn you all!! (Really, thanks!!)
While I was ordering the starter, I also got all new hood and deck lid struts, new brake pads, voltage regulator, and seal kits for all 4 calipers.

-Forget I ever mentioned it!

Well... I'll be... ah... leaving.

I forgot to mention the full RS suspension I purchased...

So, to recap... New clutch, plugs, caps, rotors, many seals, many gaskets, starter, lower valve covers, voltage reg, misc. fasteners, suspension, rear calipers, RS pulley conversion, and many powder coated pieces...
I am sure I missed something. My garage is a complete mess, with boxes and pieces everywhere. (Not sure of my point... maybe just that I would like to not keep buying parts and put the engine back in.)

EDIT: continued from above... Hood struts, deck lid struts, fuel filter, oil filter, oil, oil lines, .......................................

Ok... Just reviving this old thread...

I've just had the dubious pleasure of unbolting my C2 Tiptronic starter.

I have under gone the 'top bolt' rite-of-passage ritual and emerged victorious
(do I get a badge or medal or something?)

Now, the starter is completely free and the only thing which prevents me
holding it aloft and yelling 'VICTORY!' is the fact I can't get the bloody thing out!
No matter which way I turn it, there ain't enough room.

My half shaft is disconnected, but I haven't lowered the engine or trans
(please don't say lower it. I'm tired and emotional... I'm not sure I could take it.)

Please, anyone that has done this on the tiptronic - give me a clue.
I'm gonna try again in the morning.

When you've had a little rest,a pint, and maybe some time with your favorite pet, read the rest of my post...

You need to lower the engine. It's not hard though... just a few bolts will give you the clearance you need. Also you might need to take the free end of the starter and try to point it UP, and into the body cavity, then lower it out with the bendix end down. (IF I recall correctly this is what had to happen for me, but I am a 5 sp car.)

the starter is pretty easy, the key, just like several have mentioned, is having the right tool. (which often is the same issue related to girlfriends as well...) I found that a short allen cut to fit in a thin wall socket, and then a "wobble" extension makes a pretty easy job of the top nut... dropping the rear of the motor is also helpful to get some room as well, and then you don't have to fuss with the shift linkage...

Default It's out!

It's out!

Just managed to get it out without lowering gearbox or engine.
I'm quite sure that, physically, there is not enough room to remove
the starter it can only be done with a Jedi mind trick.

If it's any help to those that follow, here's a picture of the starter
and the socket arrangement.

Thanks for the claiming words Thomas.

Now... got to get a new one and put it all back.
