Did I get the wrong kit? Bilstein HD's & H&R Red
Part no's:
Bilstein HD shock rear (2)
F4-B46-1735-H0
Bilstein HD shock fronts
F4-VE3-5278-H0 right
F4-VE3-5277-H0 left
Springs H&R Porsche
29834
Here are my concerns:
My car is a 1990 C2.
The front shocks look like I have about 1.5" of threads. That doesn't seem like much... is it right? My adjustable miata coilovers had a LOT more threads than this.
Thanks for your help.

The standard shocks on these cars (Bilstein HD, Bilstein Sport, Boge, etc..) are not fully adjustable - the threaded collar is to balance the height per corner (you get a bit of height adjustment, but not a lot), not to adjust ride height up or down as you would normally do on a standard coilover. My standard Turbo shocks (Boge) look pretty much the same.
Think of them as half way between fixed platform shocks and fully height adjustable coilovers I think if you want full height adjustability you would need to go for something like the Bilstein PSS9's.

Are you sure? In all the listings I've seen (in the UK) for the PSS9 kit there are no model year restrictions mentioned for the 964.
But I admit this seems strange as other Bilstein and Boge rear shocks are always listed according to whether they are 89/90 or 91 onwards.

The rear shocks on the 964 platform changed in mid-1991. Do a search, there's a lot of info on this topic in the forums, it's also in Adrian's book.
The fronts stayed the same and judging by the picture above, they look like standard Bilsteins for 964 and 993 cars. I can't comment on the rears, you need to measure them.

Steve, There is a howto on how to make the PSS9s work on pre 91 style rear ends.
https://rennlist.com/forums/diy-964-1989-1994-911/212439-diy-pss-9-on-a-89-a.html
I presume this approach would work for other makes of dampeners as well.

Hi,
I just took delivery of my Bilstein HD's today too - For my 1990 C4.
I have the same part numbers as you, except mine end " H1 " instead of " H0 " like yours do
Bilstein HD shock rear (2)
F4-B46-1735-H1
Bilstein HD shock fronts
F4-VE3-5278-H1 right
F4-VE3-5277-H1 left
Does anyone know the difference?
Also, does the rear not require the blue 'dust covers' (not knowing the technical name!) that the fronts have?
Many thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam,
For some reason the rears don't come with sleeves, so you have to use the old ones or order new from Porsche. I ordered new when I did mine.

To all 89 & 90 owners,
The PSS9s can be used. There is info on John's 964 site about this or a kit is available from places like CDOC, Rothsport, or Rennsport Systems to adapt the 993 PSS9 dampers for use on the rear of the early 964. I have this setup on my 1990 964 and love it. I have all the height and damping adjustability I will ever need. Had the Bilstein HD and lowering springs and did not like it, much more neutral and tossable now.

Yes, if you would have spent the 18 on membership you would have saved big time. However it's not to late to buck up and score some great deals in the future. The future is RENNLIST.
