Default Handbrake

Mine never works properly. My indie tells me this is a common trait of all 964's and even when they tighten the cable makes little difference so I always park in gear.

Is this consistent with your cars?

Cheers,
James

I've never had a problem with mine, both the C2 and now the C4 have a solid feel to them.

I've got the same with mine Jim

Handbrakes next to useless, going to try new shoes when I get round to sorting the brakes.
Mine has been adjusted so it worked by my mech but it only lasted one track day and 1000 road miles before it got sloppy again.

When I bought my car, my wife had real problems with the handbrake. She couldn't pull it up sufficiently to hold the car on hills.

I adjusted it using the method posted by JasonAndreas in the technical discussion area of this forum. He hit the nail on the head when he said it was 1/10 for difficulty but 10/10 for frustration (especially when you've been clicking the gear the wrong way and can't figure out why the wheel won't lock ).

It's a lot better now, however I've adjusted the cable mechanism so that you pull it a lot higher than before to engage the handbrake. This seemed to give a bit more leverage. Before you'd need about 3 clicks to engage, but my wife still battled with this. It's now set to engage at 6-7 clicks and she find this easier.

I'm keen to hear any other experiences.

Mine was about 5-6 clicks to engage plus one hard click to hold when I purchased the car.

I used Jason's DIY (thanks!) and now I have 3 clicks to engage plus one hard click to hold.

I've not checked the shoes.

It'd be nice to do away with the hard click, but I can manage and my wife doesn't want to drive the car.

Mine locks crazy tight. I think it is about 4 to engage and one hard to really get it tight. If I go 6 clicks it takes both hands to unlock it.

I would not be excited at all about leaving my car on any noticeable slope using only the engine to hold it. I've never experimented with the 964, but I have had plenty of other vehicles where the engine would turn over thus allowing the vehicle to lurch forward or backward when in gear with the engine off.

easy to adjust, loosen one screw behind the change cup, lift the cover and then rotate the adjustment screw while engaging the brake and you see the cable tighten up, too much adjustment and the cable goes slake. I usually engage the brake just enough where the car still slightly rolls and then pull it up one more time. That seems to set the brake better than engaging it when completely stopped. Placing the car in second gear with the brake engaged is the safest habit.

Mine has the same issue. I need to adjust it as I'm pretty sure I'll rip the handbrake out of the chassis someday trying to pull up hard enough! j/k but it is very tight and surprisingly for the amount of tightness it doesn't grab the brakes very much!!
