Default Engine break in question

After a complete engine rebuild, what do you think the break in period should be?

My recipe: I kept it under 4500RPM for the first 100 miles; I drove the car for 100 miles with dino oil, then changed the filter and oil with dino oil again, ran for 500 or so more (which included 1 race going to redline often!) miles, then changed to synthetic and ran several more races. The engine has not blown up, so it has worked thus far!

Mine was broken in on the engine dyno (2 days of tuning). After that, nothing was required. I took it out and went racing. Oil was changed after about 3 hours use.

You want to get cylinder pressure into the engine to push the rings against the cylinder wall to wear them in. After the initial startup with new camshafts, this is the second most important piece. To accomplish this, you need to load the engine. I would run the car moderately, and I'd use all of the rev range (to redline) but not full throttle. Sometimes the engines break in easily, other times they may show signs of smoking when cold. I use this as a guide as to when to switch over to synthetic oil.

Most of the engines I do are broken in on the dyno as Tom said.

I did mine by pushing it up and down hills for the first hour, revving it up and down to seat the new rings, did not stay at any single rpm for any length of time.
