Default Taking AERO Mirrors apart

Have gotten a set of aero mirrors finally - but want to paint them to match car - I am trying to figure out how to take the top off of the base. It is spring loaded with a great deal of tension. I can't seem to get the center hollow "bolt" that compresses the spring pushed in enough to turn it to the release point.
Any one done this without breaking the housing as it appears a great deal of pressure is required.
Does anyone have a magic trick for doing this ? THKS

PAIN IN THE ***. It's not impossible but it will become your life's work. Just paint them together.

you need some long screw washers, close hook, etc..
Now that I know how to I would take me two minutes. But the first time.. is a b!tch..
Like ilko said, just paint them together.. it's not worth it.

That sounds about right. Ebay or junk yards/dismantlers.

G'day Gus,

I used a different approach when I did mine.

In the picture below is the tool I made. This tool is bolted or screwed onto a solid object. (I tek screwed it to a wooden bench) The hex bolt at the top is the right size to fit into the pivot bolt of the mirror from the bottom.

I then pushed down on the mirror while gently rotating till the tabs lined up with the slots and the mirror came apart.

You can see from inside how far it has to be rotated.

good luck.

Frank

Thanks for all the great info - Marc, great link thats for the lead. Ilko, I agree probably will be a major "PAIN IN THE ***" but, I think I will have to give it a try. Frank, your device looks like it will work - I just question the amount of pressure you can put on the upper mirror housing before you crack it. But - certainly looks like a route to follow - would thin the you need to anchor the device fairly securely though. Again - thank you all for the great info and suggestions - I now venture into the world of the unknown armed with the needed knowledge.

Donoman-
I forgot to add - that I ended up with 4 aero mirrors - 2 as pre assembled mirrors that I have to repaint and one set (2) that are unassembled that I bought off of ebay - for $400 - I have checked and all the pieces are there you just have to put together and paint or paint and put together- Let me know if you are interested as I don't need and want to get rid of.

Do I go Aero or not? That is the question...
+ I love the look
- does it devalue the originality? ie. will "purists" scoff when time to sell???

One of the hardest jobs you will ever do. I had a shp do mine. They even complained. One tip is take the spring and squeeze it in a vice for about a week. this will releave some of the crazy power it has when new.
