Default engine insulation blanket question

I have a 1991 964 that has a cracked and falling engine blanket / insulation. Replacement does not look promising with the engine in the car, although I have not yet tried to install. Is there any way to get this in with the engine in there?

It would be VERY difficult to facilitate and have a "clean" installation, but most shops would claim they've done it.

At the very least, they would have to drop your engine down about 4 - 6" which is fairly "low drama"...the new insulation pad is quite different from the heavy duty original, but still somewhat sturdy once it's installed with spray adhesive and the black plastic "buttons" that assist in holding it up there.

Any particular reason you want to replace it? About all it does is trap moisture and heat in there. One of my first tasks was to rip mine completely out. Taking it out seems to help with engine cooling just a hair too.

The original one in there now is a mess. It is all cracking and starting to come down. I am going to be eventually going to be showing my car in PCA events, so I will need to replace it.

Drop the engine so you can do it right. Then you can get in there and clean any dirt and grime from the painted surfaces.

Well, that would be one valid reason to replace it I guess
