Thanks for the info Bull

Hi Adam, there's a "Battery World" just up the road from me, so I will pop in there and see what they have. (PS. does the VFR give you as big a buzz as the P car? Sorry, dumb question )

I think I will not pick the cheapest option, but instead spend a few extra $ and get something good.

My next big problem is to possibly install a "socket" somewhere on the car so I dpn't need to leave the bonnet open whilst charging. Car is kept in an undercover "common" carpark most days, relatively secure, but I can't lock the doors whilst the front lid is up, because the alarm starts to scream it's little head off. Don't want to really leave the doors unlocked for hours at a time.

Any suggestions???

Don't know the brand off hand, but I have used several where the lead to the electrical connection is a flat wire, allowing me to close the front lid (bonnet) while it is connected. Look for brands with a flat wire lead.

Do you want to have the bonnet completely closed? remember the fumes are flamable. You need something that allows the fumes to escape. In my case I close the bonnet (I like this word, bonnet) on the first stop so the light it out but its not sealed.

Hi Oracle

aren't the batteries sealed? How would fumes escape? Or do I need to remove something on battery when trickle charging?

PS. sorry, UK Engklish v's US English.... some definitions
bonnet = hood
boot = trunk
left = right
Porsche = FUN

"!Thanks Springer3
just read all the specs. Perfect. Now just need to find one in my neck of the woods"

Thank Who ?

An andreson sb 50 hiding behind the hinged license plate would be my best guess . If you want a real nice hinged license plate holder , get one from a vw vanagon .

VFR is great mate, I call it the FrankenViffer as I've fitted a complete front end from an RC51 to it

I leave my hood/bonnet/front lid thing ajar, just latched, while connected to the trickle charger, and can still lock doors and have alarm enabled. This also allows the courtesy light to turn off. I also have an A4 piece of paper under the drivers side windscreen wiper to stop the Mrs. reversing with it attached

I use Griot's Garage "Battery Manager II". It runs 1.5A and cost $60. I keep both 911s plugged in at all times, unless of course I am out for that fun drive (Speedster) or track time (GT3). Although expensive, I have been very happy with Griot's products...

Edit: A quick flip through Griot's catalogue revealed the $99 Automatic 100AMP Battery Charger. It will vary the rate between 2 and 15 amps, and the will charge a taper charge before shutting off. It also has an "engine starting" mode... Sounds like what you are looking for!

Some are totally sealed like the Optima but if you have a regular black battery they either have a small pipe for the fumes to escape or the screw caps don't make a perfect seal (on pupose) or there is a small hole (respirator) somewhere...
Easy to find just flip the battery and see where the acid comes out
(DON'T DO THIS, I'm just kidding).

No the batteries are not 100% sealed so if you ever use a trickle charger before you do anything open the hood and make sure all fumes are gone, there is a small risk of ka-boom..

If you put your battery on a 20A trickle charger you can actually hear the battery bubbling and the smell will be strong enough for you to realize that thing is not sealed.

Be safe..

"How would fumes escape?"
If the battery is charged by the 115 Amp alternator while the battery is under the closed hood ...

If the charger or alternator is causing the battery to "fume" , somethings very very wrong .
If a 6 amp fully automatic 3 step computer controlled battery charger ever causes a battery to fume , its very broken .

I just have a Porsche maintenance charger. Plugs into the ciggly lighter socket. I just drop the passenger side window a touch and plug it in. Porsche has two models.

Hi Craig

that's interesting, I had no idea the lighter was a "two-way" connection, ie. feeds BACK into the battery... I will definately explore this option.

Thanks

I have a 1.8 watt solar charger, as my car sadly spends most of it's time outside. Again, just plug it into the ciggy lighter socket and put the solar panel in the windscreen. www.solar-batterycharger.co.uk

No fumes from mine, and on some of the Porsches the light stays on at the first stop/safety latch position.
