Default Bursch test pipe/cat bypass- anyone have one?

On the frequently posed question of cat bypasses, the Bursch seems to be the best bang for the buck (no pun) at $240 from Vertex.

Is simple and not sexy looking but looks functional enough- in fact non-functional as its really not supposed to do anything.

Any shared experience appreciated.

TIA

That's not quite true. I haven't seen data on the 964 system but back in the day, back to back dyno runs w/ cat vs. euro premuffler vs straight pipe, showed ~8-10hp gains from the euro premuffler over the cat and ~5-7hp over the straight pipe. This was on 3 liter SC and 3.2 liter Carrera. 964 stock exhaust is similar.
Bruce Anderson either documented this in his books, mentioned it at a Tech or told me in a conversation. can't remember where though.

I have the Bursch pipe on my car. I bought it from Vertex while on a phone call. I had assumed it was SS as they had other SS pieces. It is a painted steel piece with a O2 sensor bung.

The pipe fits very well. Bolted right into place, no troubles. I used a new O2 sensor and installed it. The flange fits the exhaust gasket fine and everything tightened down, seemingly without trouble. However I've noticed, after the fact, that the flange on the test pipe has crimped a bit. It isn't leaking from that location but it did crimp. I think the fact that the steel is milder then the gasket is the cause. The SS pieces are much tougher and I've never crimped any of that despite repeated R&R of the exhaust for maint.

HP gains? Who knows. I didn't dyno it nor do I plan to. My car has the test pipe, cup pipe from Dansk and a ProMax chip. I don't know what the HP is and really don't care. Knowing the number isn't going to make the car any faster and I plan no other mods so it's a moot point to me. I can tell you the car will run a 5.1 0-60 according to my Escort G-Timer. Take it all with a grain of salt.

If I were to do it again, I'd spend the extra $50 or so on the Dansk. It's SS and likely worth the dollar spent.

Overall, the car sounds good. To me. It's not for everyone. In truth, it's loud. With the windows up, I hardly notice it. With the windows down, I can tell it's loud to the point of being self-conscious. I've got some video of a high speed pass that I'll try to post later if someone is able to host. It does have a mean grumble.

As a side note, my car passed emissions here in WA state with the test pipe in place. My car was recently serviced and in a fresh state of tune.

After orderling the Bursch, Vertex called me back and said they had the ss Schnell for the 964 for another $10 so I ordered that instead.

I will let you know the outcome

What's the difference between a cat, Euro premuffler, 100 cell sport cat, straight pipe...just different levels of "stuff" inside?

i don't know about a Euro premuffler, but a regular cat has numerous cels that make it the most restrictive (and heavy) option. A straight pipe or bypass is the least restrictive (and lightest). A sport cat is in between the two and generally range between 100 and 300 cels (more cels = more restriction).
