Default Morning startup question

Im just getting to know my 964....C2, 1990. When I cold start her in the morning, she usually takes around 5-7 cranks before she fires up..and then shes running nicely Is this normal, or should she fire up on the first crank (like my old acura used too ?

Out of curiosity, how many cranks does it take for your engine to startup when cold? I find that when hot, she starts up on the 2nd or 3rd crank....but when cold, a little longer.

Is it true, that its good practice to wait 10 seconds before starting the car in the morning or when cold? I heard something about letting the fuel pump prime...

Cheers!

Mine typically starts on the first try... but it is summer here. What's the temp in the morning where you are?

One crank...summer or winter.
Something is fishy with yours, good luck.
Maybe the experts will chime in.

The fuel pump has a check valve somewhere so you shouldnt need to prime. Dont touch the pedal when starting. Mine starts first turnover.

First time, everytime. The engine always fires immediately.

Check the battery condiditon. It does take a healthy battery to crank/run the car.
Check the terminals to ensure they are clean and in good condition.
When was the last tune-up?
What type of fuel are you using?
Any contaminants in the fuel tank?

Any serious trouble-shooting should begin once you know the car to be in a good state of tune. If the plugs, caps, rotors and wires are suspect? Start with a fresh tune. Many standard wear items can cause the trouble you are dealing with.

mine just recently started doing that also(5-7 cranks)...however I was told when I bought the car that the battery was about to hit the feed yard so I'm guessing that's why.. It definitely seems like it's ready for replacement and i'll be picking up an Optima this weekend!

Might be also worth checking your distributor caps and rotors.

How is the compression on the engine? It may just be a tired engine - how many miles are on it provided it hasn't been rebuilt?

mine sometimes takes a 2nd crank to turnover when cold-typically my car sits for a few days between drives. It is a 91 C2 with 106k miles and just had a complete 15k miles service(caps, rotors, plugs, valve adj, etc).

Everytime on a cold start mine fires up and dies once or twice before it idles. It does this if it is 30 degrees outside or 100 degrees outside. I have never really worried about it too much.

Mine started first time everytime as well.

Unless my foot was on the throttle, then it would give problems.

Hmmm...based on a quick read of this thread, it seems some people are equating a "crank" to a cycling of the ignition key, while others (including myself) equate a crank to a revolution of the engine on the starter motor.

My 964 always starts the first time - but it also can take more than one crank in the morning.

Maybe a better question is: what is your elapsed time between the ignition key hitting the start position and the time you release the key with the engine running?

I'll try to time mine in a few minutes when I head out.
