Default Battery price

Hi all

I have just paid £135.00 for a battery for my c4 convertable.

Surely that price is expensive, i feel like i have just been ripped off.

The battery was listed for my car 90ah, with a 3 year guarantee

They said if i could find a lower price within 7 days they will match it.

Any ideas for a cheaper one ?

Everyone seems to like the Optima.

However, I believe that the soft tops require/recommend a larger capacity battery than the coupes and targas, and other cars for that matter, due to the electric top which, I guess, you can operate without the engine running?

        Rating
Be careful to get the correct rating.
From memory, different 964 subtypes need different 'strengths'.
Actually, it is not strengths but rather the capacity of the battery.
There is no harm in having a 90Ah battery if you only
need 70, but it canbe annoying for a Cabrio owner if he has too
          little capacity....
        Size and footing
One important feature is that it has is the proper feet on
it for the Porsche battery clamp.
      Optima red top. ~$100 (12-04-2004)
        x - don't make this any more - RED75/35 model
Fits pefectly with stock battery clamp.
3 year free replacement and 7 yr pro rated.
Can be found around $100 (Costco) or $120 (sears).
Nothing has the cranking power of the optima. By far the
best battery going. A big plus is you never need to worry
about acid spilling and damaging the floor pan.
I have had several optima batteries and seen them last
upwards of 9 years, they also will recharge if you drain
        them unlike standard batteries.
      Autozone ~$60 (12-04-2004)
Something like a 7 year warranty with first 2 years free replacement.
One important feature is that it has is the proper feet on
it for the Porsche battery clamp.

I fit the red top Optima a couple of weeks ago. There is an adapter that needs to be fitted so that the hold-down works properly, and I still needed a longer bolt. The positive terminal had to be reworked, but this is a fine upgrade for the 964. I got mine at Pep Boys for $125. Batteries must cost more in the UK.

Dave

You were ripped off!. Have a look at Euro Car Parts and German Swedish (GSF) websites. I bought a new Bosch Silver for my 90 C4 Cab at Euro CP 2 months ago and paid £64.63 over the counter. A 75 Ah is now the accepted standard for the cab (was 88Ah) and Bosch Silver is the preferred make. Description is Bosch Battery Type 096/100.

Regards

+1 for german and swedish, ask for a better/trade price, usually gets me an extra 10% off.

I recently did the Bosch Silver via Euro-car parts too. Exact fit.
I'm happy sticking with a high quality 'traditional' style battery for the moment. Optima does look good though, especially for those who leave their cars unused for weeks at a time etc.

Dave,

I had a lot of trouble with two Bosch Silver batteries . They both died pretty well instantly , out of the blue ! Both inside one year .The warranty became valueless . I heard a few other similar stories about Bosch stuff , nearly as bad as the genuine Porsche dealer batteries !

I switched over to a Blue Varta 74 amp . Thats run perfectly for 5 years .

You will get lots of doom stories I am sure but why should I stop !!!

All the very best

Geoff

Dave, glad you managed to sort them out.

For anyone else, as well as the companies mentioned above, I've always found LSUK (Lucas Service I think) very good and cheap. Effectivly for the trade and not designed to rip anyone off.
