Default AC condenser fan ballast resistor

Replacement part 993-616-521-01-M100 is $53.50 on Pelican

Has anyone tried an alternate "radio-shack"alternative? A resistor is a resistor. thought it might be worthwhile to save a bit on this resistor, so I can justify buying something else...

However, I do need to fix this. The wife was very unhappy with the AC performance today coming home from the F1 and IMSA GT-3 practice.

Darrell, I am heading this direction fast. Did you find any alternatives?

I went the simple route - bought a new OEM ballast resistor from Sunset for approx $34 plus ship, and installed it in about an hour total time. Unlike some of the past posts on this change-out, I had no trouble getting the 4mm allen head bolt loose - just a bit tedious. I also fixed my "frown" while I had the car jacked up and had some of the screws already out.
Bottom line - the AC works much better now, and it kept the spousal unit (wife) cool on a 2-day winery tour this weekend.
I am sure there is a cheaper alternative available out there in the electronics industry - 0.45 ohm, 53W - but I just coughed up the $ and bolted in a new one.

What are the symptoms of a failing AC ballast resistor? Just curious for future reference, since my AC blows ice cold.

If it blows air out of the driver side left front slits its working.

IIRC, Operation of this fan is going to be the same (almost) as the oil cooler fan diagnostics...

On my car, and per the trouble-shooting guide in Adrian's book, the AC condenser fan would cycle on/off on high speed only, and never run in low speed. The high speed operation is switched on by a high pressure switch at the evaporator. Thus, the condenser was never operating "properly", and the high pressure switch was kicking in at the extreme end of the operating range.

Mine turned out to be a fuse. Much easier and cheaper!
