I just bought a 1990 964 Carrera 2 Convertible with 26,000 miles.

It is guards red and champagne interior. I am so excited. It is my first porsche, and I think it is beautiful piece of art.

Several questions. Although the previous owner was meticulous, the carpets need SERIOUS cleaning (front and back and side panels). Does anyone have a suggestion to get this looking almost new looking. I think it is just 17 years of dirt.

Also the air conditioner does not blow cold. It has been converted to 134a, but when we poured the liquid in, while the car was running you can see the flourescent green coming out. I know this expensive ordeal, but in NY summer, I won't be using air conditioner much. Any thoughts.

Despite all this I am so excited to post, have the car and interact on this forum.

I rented a carpet cleaner and scoured my carpets when I got it -- they came out sparkling.

Sorry but I can't help you with the A/C - I have no idea if mine works as I've never used it and it is slated for removal some day....

Thank you so much for the idea about the commercial vacuum. Did you use any cleaning product to get the dirt out? With regards to the low mileage, I got really lucky, it was bought by somone who had several cars, and only drove it couple of times a year.

You probably need your AC compressor rebuilt or replaced with a rebuilt one. I assume you are seeing the indicator green dye coming out of the compressor. Cost about $350 or so and is easy to do yourself except havig a shop evacuate the freon. Might be more economical to have your original one rebuilt. Or just have a shop evacuate the system and remove the compressor. Could even find one in any of the various salvage shops that specialize in Porsche parts. If the system was converted to 134 whichit probably was, and the hose "O" rings were not replaced, they will leak. Join the club as a member and show some pics.

Thank you for the information on the leak. I will look into that. a Cursory explanation of the leak to Porsche said replacement could cost well over $5,000.00. (but I believe he was assuming the 134a was not done)

With regards to posting pics, I hope to take some this weekend, as I have the car parked 20 miles from my apartment in NYC. It is safer, and no one can move it, bump it, etc.

Yeah, well rule #2 (Rule #1 is to post a pic of your new car), is to take your car not to a Porsche dealership, but to an independent mechanic who specializes in Porsches

Where in NY are you? I might be able to recommend you a few places.

Congratulations and welcome. You can try and go to www.autopia.org and read up on How-Tos for carpet cleaning. Although a professional detailer with the right tools might be able to do a great job if all you want is the carpets cleaned.

I have a lot of homework this weekend, but more importantly I am getting on the road for some sun/top down driving this weekend. Hope to get some good shots for the forum. Thanks

Which hose "O" rings, exactly? Are you talking about all of the o-rings. There are quite a few in the system. That would be a big job.

Sorry Dfinnagan for the late response. The "o" rings I am referring to are the small ones at the hose connection to the compressor. An AC mechanic informed me that these small ones are frequently reused because they look good but are really prone to leaks if the hose is disconnected from the compressor and reconnected.

Porsche 1990. Stay clear of that dealer who quoted you $5000. R12 conversions to 134a are inexpensive with the right shop as iLKo suggest. Mine cost about $100 and not much more than that if you have to change out the dryer. There is a 134a mix that is compatable with a R12 compressor. Just need two inexpensive valve/ hose attachments to the compressor. No changes in condensor or dryer. I get AC at 45F out of my vents. I want to throw up when I hear these rediculous quotes from Porsche dealers, that's why I stay away from them. I'll take my chances with "2 guys and a garage" anyday.
