Judging by the numbers showing up I would say that North American models started at
45000 and the ROW started at 40000 or 40200. Mine was the 459th built for the NA market and MSHOBE's was the 206th.

Kirk,
You are correct. According to Adrian's book - page 577 - the ROW 89 C4 Coupes run from 400001 to 402068 and the US cars from 4500001 to 4501117.

Dave

My German market 400200 was delivered to Porsche dealer Autohaus Minrath on the 2nd of March 1989 .
What puzzled me were references to August production start .
Thanks to you guys I know it is number 200 and the earlier cars are maybe still in Germany . Be good to find an earlier one for some reason !!

My Red Book pegs it as the very first set of C4's sent stateside, produced between Jan-July 1989. 1,117 produced, nos. 50001-51117. Some I'm fairly sure I'm sitting on #206 in that series of 1,117.
Still working on rolling up her 50,000th mile! This baby's seen too much of the garage in her lifetime.

Geoff,
The thing that confuses here is that Porsche, in common with most of the European manufacturers, start their model year product after the Summer recess, i.e. in August/September. So MY '89 cars are produced from August '88 through to July '89.

Kirk,
That is a great idea . At the start I thought that no one would be interested at all in this stuff .No one else as sad as me !!!
Looks like I was wrong.

Geoff,
Yep, fact is we are all just as bad. Maybe we should get Marc to ask whoever could handle the request for us. Maybe something we can put at the top of the forum (like the price list thread?)

On a slightly off topic,(slightly?) I heard a rumour you have worked with the piggyback EFI systems that SoK used with their superchargers? True?

Kirk,
Unfortunately that is true . I fully calibrated one of the first SoK cars ,to run very well on Motronic in the UK . That involved Hot Film + correct injectors etc .The car was very good . 400bhp + and tons of torque .
The car was a daily driver and was doing long distance trans continental trips !
3 years later the motor went back from the servicing Official dealer to the USA for a precautionary rebuild .
It returned with that stuff attatched . The dealer could not make it run . I thought it would be something obvious . WRONG .
In the end I gave up and the car went to a well known specialist where it was found that the rebuild was a disaster . That demanded a comprehensive further rebuild .
I did see the car for sale some time later but had NO interest in how it was made to run.
My view , as a Motronic expert ,is that addons are an interesting way to spread confusion and make some money .
Sorry if that sounds bitter but I was very annoyed that such a good conversion was destroyed in that way.

It would be useful to have all the VINs listed and owners to add their name and location and any other details they wanted to share. Agreed, it would be a long list.
My initial thoughts are that we should list just the VIN and let the owner add items like:
Body style, colour, location, name etc. etc. It needs some special software to handle a dynamic database - perhaps JohnD could comment on the feasibility??
