Default Anyone got opinions on K&N style bolt on intakes?

Hi there,

Searched the forums and could not find too much info. PorscheShop.co.uk have one for about 100 sterling.... are these a worthwhile replacement for the air box on our cars? Do they give noticable increase in performance and do they give a better noise? I think they look good in the engine bay, but would like to get a deeper sound from my 964.

Design911 have this one, and this is the type of thing I am on about:

Any opinions or experiences welcome...

Thanks

Adrian

I was thinking about this but concerned about the heat. There is no heat shield with these so might be a problem in slow moving traffic etc. You can get a better sound by drilling holes in the air box cover!

Yeah, I have one.
It does look good and you can hear it sucking in air...which is cool sometimes.
The noise is from the intake, you can still do stuff to the exhaust.
Don't think it really adds hp.
I think I might just put my stock airbox in with a K&N sometime.

What exhaust setup do you have at the moment?

Do a search and I think you will find there is some negative opinion about these things concerning oil and dirt which can end up in the engine.

Measured results are lower low speed BHP because of intake air temp .
If Honda noise is your thing , go for it.

I had one on my car and was advised to take it off by Porsche specialists. Probably appear on Ebay soon though I do miss the sound it produced.

Cheers all. maybe I will drill the airbox instead.... although from Adrian's book I see that this makes no difference... except for noise which is important too!!

I have that setup on my motor. I have had no real problems with it.

I used the hammer to watch the intake temps. They were similar to #s posted from people with drilled airboxes.

Sounds kinda cool. Gives me more room around the engine.
