Default 964 targa AWD

we are shopping for a 964 Targa AWD. please would anyone kindly help us with the questions below:-

(1) 964 TARGA AWD is available at 89, 90, 91, 92 and 93 ?

(2) 964 TARGA AWD Tiptronic is available at 89, 90, 91, 92 and 93 ?

(3) 964 AWD from 89-93 is commonly called 911-964 carrera 4 ?

(4) where do we find a buying guide for a 964 Targa AWD (with or without tiptronic) ?

(5) this is a silly question, but what is the "reasonable" price range for a good 964 targa AWD ?

thank you very much.

No C4 (all-wheel drive 964's) had the tiptronic transmission; they are all 5 speed models.

964 C4's were made for model years 1989 to 1994.

thank you for your kind reply.

regarding the AWD, how about 911 targa before the 964 ?

for example, did they make a 911 targa AWD in 88 (before the introduction of the 1989 964 targa AWD) ??

thanks.

AWD was first only available to consumers in the 964 model in 1989 - so nothing available before that. Well, the 959 is pre-89, but super expensive, and not a targa for that matter!

There are Targas, starting in the late 1960's... but no C4's!

I just checked - no Targa models in 1989... so you are looking for a 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 C4 Targa. All C4's in 1994 were "turbo-look" versions - coupe's with turbo bodies.

please let us know how the turbo body differs from the "normal" one. thank you very very much.

also, are you saying that 90, 91, 92 and 93 C4 (i.e. 964 targa AWD) has one body type whereas the 94 model has another body type (the turbo body) ?

Looks! There is more of course, but for your purchase I think looks is going to be your major decision maker. You'll pay a huge premium for that wide body. Someone else will have to chime in with actualy differences such as brakes, suspension, etc.

I think the other questions have been answered...I'll try to fill in..

3 - Yes. Mine is called a 964 C4 Targa, for example.

4 - Pick up the "Porsche 911 Enthusiast's Companion" for the C2/C4 years. http://www.adrianstreather.com/writings.htm , you can get it for $40-50usd on Amazon.com. VERY much worth it!

5 - Good is all relative... Look at the sticky thread at the top of this forum, and you can browse thru recent sale prices of what we all paid for our cars.. For a decent low mileage, or a real good shape high miles car (well maintained) expect to pay around $20k for a deal, all the way up to $25-28k for mint condition car...

If you are looking in the states - I am aware of a targa for sale in Columbus, OH.. not sure if it is a C4 or not. My car also might be for sale very soon, as I'm heading back to traveling all the time and can't see driving it less than I already do!

Regards,

Mike

thank you for all the useful information. $25000 for a good 964 targa AWD (non-turbo body) is ok.

another silly question: "normally speaking", how much does it cost for maintenance and repair a year ?

(( we have a 1992 mercedes 500SL and it costs around $5000 a year to maintain and repair. ))

Depends how much you drive it... I just picked up my car today from the shop for the 12k mile valve adjustment, oil change, and some small misc items and it was just over $1000. Figure at least $1k a year, and with any other items I think $1500-2000 is more accurate.

Regards,

Mike

A model year 89 Targa turbo won't be a 964... maybe the earlier kind of 911? I don't know, but 89 964's were not turbos from the factory
