Default Oil consumption

Hey guys my oil was exactly half way in between the two notches on the dipstick... after 700 miles its now at the bottom notch. Is that a good oil burn rate??? Can anyone tell me how much oil it takes to get from bottom notch to top notch??? I have a turbo i dont know if it differs from your cars. I have seen people claim that bottom to top is one quart.

The stick reads 1.75 liters top to bottom and the gauge reads 1.25 liters (+0.3 to -0.2 liters).

Oil Guage and Stick Ranges

1.05 qt/liter
1.75 liters = 1.85 qts
.925 qts / 700 miles

Sounds like a bit much compared to what I've read for our NA cars.

As I recall 600 miles/qt is what Porsche states as the maximum allowable usage, but most folks here consider that to be too much oil usage.

I run approx 2k miles/qt, as do several others here, but I think 1-2k mi/qt is normally considered acceptable.

Usage may be different for turbos?

1 litre per 1000km is in the range IIRC

Yup. Just checked the shop manuals. 1.5l/1000 km. That is 1 qt per 414 miles.

Ok thanks a lot guys, Dfinnegan is that for the 964 on your above post??? If so then i think 700 miles per .925 quarts maybe isnt so bad for a car with 134000 miles on it what do you think.

Yup. That's for the 964.

However, I've found that it's better to look at oil consumption over a much longer period of time. If I check short time frames I get skewed results. I can drive the car hard for a couple of weeks and it seems to eat up the oil, but over a longer, more average scenario it's right back up around 2k / qt.

The qt per 750 mi does seem on the high side to me, but, again, I've not seen any related info for turbos and I'm really not all that knowledgeable about these cars. I just know what I've read here and in a few books and try to provide info when I'm able. I've gotten so much value from this site I really try and pay back as I'm able.

Hopefully, others will chime in and put your mind at ease. Along those lines, does it smoke? Is there oil residue on the tail? If you put a board near the exhaust (for a v. short time!) do you get any oil? As I recall these are the sorts of things that folks look for with high oil consumption. A leak down test might help put your mind at ease, as well.

Well i personally have not seen smoke, not really even on start up, the right exhaust tip does get kinda brown after the mileage time frame we were talking about, ill try those other two methods and see what happens thanks man.

With my C2 I go through about 1 quart every 1500-1700 miles, and that's with 105k miles on the clock and a small oil leak.

Are you sure the engine temperature was the same when you read the dipstick?

How spirited was your driving? Were you cruising at 4k or better. The harder you run the engine the more oil you will consume.

I've had 2-cycle outboards that used less oil than that.

It's been 2500 miles since my oil change and I've used maybe 1/2 a quart.
If I got down below 1000mi./qt., whether it was burning or dripping, I'd be getting ready to do something$$$.
