Default Mothballed for 6 weeks

I'm going away for about 6 weeks. I'm already suffering from battery power drainage and don't have time to find the cause before I go. I am thinking of charging it then disconnecting the battery rightaway before leaving.

Any problems with this?

Will I be able to open the doors with the battery disconnected is one concern?
Any problems with the DME with no battery for so long?

Best

You will be able to open the door locks manually, but it is rather "stiff". Just turn it slowly. It felt to me like I could break the key if I wasn't careful. Maybe try it first with the window down in case you need to reach in to unlock it.

Thanks dfinnegan.

Is there a hidden release cable under the car? A 993 owner tells me he has one. Does anyone know about 964's having them?

I've read on the forums that some of the cars have a release for the hood (front), but you will have to do a search to find the threads (sorry). Also, if you can leave the hood unlatched, then you can recharge the battery when you return in order to open the door locks. Finally, if you have the time and location, you can buy a battery maintainer to keep your battery charged up while you're gone. I have a battery tender plus that I use when I store my car for the winter and it works great.

My '93 964 has an emergency hood (front) release cable. It's accessed via the left front wheel well. I've also read where some models (I've not checked mine yet) have a similar release for the engine cover (rear) accessible through the left rear turn signal assembly.

A battery maintainer keeps it charges and supposedly also removes sulfate deposits. You can connect to the battery through the lighter socket.

Better still, take the battery out of the car. Why risk damage from it leaking or venting acid fumes while you are away?

I would just disconnect it - and surely no one uses the lead-acid standard item anymore?

You don't need to charge it before you go if the car has been driven semi-regularly.
