Default Loud thunk over bumps

Just noticed today that while going over bumps in the road I get a loud thud on the right side of the car. What could this be??

If it is in the rear, I would suggest that you look at the bolt on the top of the shock tower. Although it is one of those nylon locking nuts, it could be a bit loose. (Ask me how i KNOW)

This can happen in the front too....ask me how I know.

A loose sway bar bushing can do this too.

FWIW, on mine, it was the oil line in the right rear wheel well. The strap that supports it had broken, causing a thunk over bumps. It took me a long time to find it, but all's well now. Jack the car up and check it out. It's visible with the right rear wheel removed. Sway bar mounts and shock towers are probably even more likely, but you never know.

Doc, Here in New England with the colder temps, we see more of this caused by worn bushings. They can be the sway bar and or the shock bushings. The cold increases the durometer rating of the bushings causing more noise and harshness to be exhibited over road irregularities. If the problem persist when the weather warms up a bit, I would investigate it further. If the problem is pronounced and localized to one corner in particular, I would be more concerned than if the issue were more subtle and less localized.

Good luck, Jerry

Default Thanks!

Thanks for all the info. Jerry, I will see you on Sat for the PCA meeting at your place and, of course, you will get to investigate if the noise does not resolve in the warm weather (whenever that happens around here!).
