Default C2 & C4 TRUNK/BOOT

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if the C2 has a larger trunk/boot area due the lack of 4WD, I've had look at couple of C4s and they have a large chunk of the boot space taken up by a "hump" that I assume houses the front diff etc. Just wondered if the C2 had a larger space?

Cheers,

Paul

YES, difference!

The C2 has 11 to 15% more overall space than a C4 (the 1989 C4 has the largest of the C4 series)

1989 C4 = 8.9 cubic ft
1990-94 C4 = 8.6 cubic ft

all C2's, inc. turbos, speedsters, RS's etc = 10.0 cubic ft

The main difference is the centre tunnel forward of the gear stick to accomodate the friont drive shaft.

(PS. I must give credit to Adrian for this info - all in his wonderful book!)

My 996TT has a trunk that would be a tight fit for a shoe box. Makes the one in the C2 seem to be as big as a minivan

I am not sure how there could be a difference, the bodies are identical. Regardless of what the book might say, if you look at the two cars in person, where do you see any difference? Additionally, if you look in the PET, the part number is the same for a C2 or a C4 entire body; even the sheet metal sub-frames in the parts manual have the identical part numbers - not sure where you are coming up with a difference (other than Adrian's book which is excellent, but there are some inconsistencies)

Hi Garrett376

yes, I can see where you're coming from. Page 316 of Adrians book has comparison pics of C2 v C4 and they look near identical (though it's hard to see from the pics, as they were taken from different angles). The floor of the "lower" compartment (as he calls it) does appear to be somewhat lower, but again, hard to tell from the pic.

I have always read the book as gospel, but I suppose some errors would only be human. Interesting though that he has supplied some very specific volumes in a table...

Maybe someone who owns both could do a quick comparison and enlighten us both?

I've stripped both cars to turn them into race cars (C4, C2 and C4 Widebody versions)and they are identical as far as I can tell in the interior and trunk, although I don't know how I'd measure how many cubic feet there are!!

OK, good enough for me! I will pencil in some corrections to my copy of Adrians book, he, he

PS. to measure, we could get a couple of bean bags and empty all the little polystyrene ***** into the car

I'm just spitballin here because I don't know, but if the bodies are the same are there differences when you build one up? Maybe the front diff on the C4 means a different gas tank on the C4 so less trunk room. I don't know. Any ideas along this front?

Perhaps the extra equipment for the C4 is being accounted for. The C4 has a high pressure hydraulic pump and reservoir. The C2 a vacuum assist; is that right? I'm struggling to see 1.4 cu.ft., though.

The C2 and C4 use the same plastic panel that covers the C4's hydraulic pump at the front of the trunk space, so there's no gain there. On the underside of the car, the space that houses the differential on a C4 is taken up by the monstrous vacuum brake assist unit that the C2 uses to assist the brakes - but this is all under the car anyways, so I can't imagine it makes any difference to the readings. The fuel tank is not different between C2/4 models, but it does change 3 times through the years (89-91 version, 92 version, 93-94).

Here's the front trunk from a C2.
