Default Track /DE Tires for 17" Cup 1

I track my car (1990 Carrera 2) frequently. To date I have been using Kumho Ecsta Street tires. Looking to purchase some track tires and mount them to a set of Mille Miglia Cup 1 wheels, 7.5" fron, 9" rear. What tires would you recommend and at what size? I have H&R lowering springs so the car sits at RSA height. Thanks for your help.

You may try the Yoko Advan 048Rs. I like them better than MPSC for all but the most advanced driver. They are more forgiving and unlike the MPSC they work well in a wide range of temps and track conditions.

NT-01s. We just ran them down at VIR and they are great. They are the best compromise between a Hoosier and the Toyos/Yoks with none of the unpredictability of the MPSCs. Lots of grip right out of the box, very smooth progressive release, long wearing and easy to drive.

Did you shave them first or not? Looks like they are just a tad cheaper than MPSC. hmm.

You don't need to shave them Ken. They are molded to 6/32s, and there is not a whole lot of tread pattern anyway. After a first session break in, they were fast from then on.

I have two sets of hankook Z211 R50 compound for this summer. I tried them late last summer and was very pleased. Try frisbyracetire.com they might have a few sets left. Can't really go wrong at 500$ a set. I will also run their "street" tire in 18" (hankook Z212 treadwear 200), it's also not expensive.

Good luck

Okay, just ordered a set of Yoko Advan 048s 225 & 255. I'll let you know what I think vs. my Kumho ECSTA street tires. Wish me luck!!!!! I'll be trying them at Watkins Glen in May.

Default hi-jack, but related

I have a set of race tires in very good shape from my 944T that I tracked often. This set only has a couple of DE's on them. I am getting set up to track the C4 and wondered if NE1 can help on this question:

They are 245/45/17 and 275/40/17, Victoracers (not that it matters but they are mounted on a set of oem 993 cup 2's).

Will these tires fit under my car? BTW, I am about to have my shop install the new suspension (H&R coilovers). I am guessing they are too big.

I realize that after the new lowered suspension is installed and aligned, I could take the time to mount them and then drive the car around but i'm trying to avoid that.

Thanks guys!!

245/275 will defintiely fit on a narrow body 964, assuming the right offset wheels & enough camber.

Thanks Colin. How about with factory oem 17" 993 cup 2's (7" F & 9" R ?) and regular street alignment? Inside rub likely?

I don't think that what you really want is available in the USA.

I am running Toyo R888's which are a big step forward compared with RA-1's. Having had my first race day on them this Sunday gone, I can truly say I am in love........with the tyres!

I have a 1989 C4. I plan to use a set of 16" Cup 1 wheels that I have and a set of the Yoko 048Rs. The plan is to do 2 or 3 weekend DE events this summer and fall, 2 at Mid Ohio and 1 at Gingerman. I will drive to the track with the tires mounted. I do not want to tear up my nice street tires and would rather have a set of beater track wheels. I do have a set of 17" Pilot Sport Cup tires mounted in my garage, but they scare me a bit and I was told by my instructors numerous times to be very careful with these when could and not push the car to the edge as it will go fast when it does.

I had a C2 that I spun and crashed at Watkins Glen. At any other track it would have been something to laugh about over a beer afterwards, but at Watkins Glen, any spin puts you into a wall. I hit the wall sideways at about 10 mph after the spin. My car was totaled, no injury to the instructor or myself. I was using regular 17" Pilot Sport Rib street tires, they were not the cause of my crash. I will not go back to Watkins Glen until I gain some more experience and have a beater car and trailer.

That said, which to use this summer/fall, the Medium Compound or the Medium Hard Compound. Summer temps are about 80 to 90 and this fall it could be 40 to 60 degrees. I could also go with RA'1s, but not as easy to buy since Tirerack does not have them.

Thanks!!!
