Question harmonic balancer trivia question....

I am curious if the harmonic balancer pulley on the crank is balanced to itself, or balanced to a particular crank, making them non-interchangeable between different engines.

My inclination is that it is balanced to itself, which would make the initial assembly much easier, but I wanted to make sure!!!

Thanks

to itself.
If it was used to balance the crank , that would be crazy .

Its the rubber center thats the clue !
Even with a perfectly balanced crank etc a running motor produces harmonic resonances in the crank.
The rubber mounted pulley is used to counteract that effect .
All good stuff.

"Its the rubber center thats the clue !"
Eh ?
The pully has been balanced by spinning it and then adding or removeing metal .

He was not asking whats the function .

I was not and am not pissed .

We are just talking about two different things .
Is the harmonic balancer pulley interchangable from crank to crank ?
Could you and I trade harmonic balancers without doing harm ?
Or is the crank / harmonic balancer pulley , ballanced as a unit ?
If the crank/pully were balanced as a unit , when we traded , we would be doing "bad".

Indycam,
You are perfectly correct. The damper is a stand alone item. You would not want the damper from my motor as its a 993 !
All the very best

Thanks guys... I wanted to be sure swapping pulleys between engines would not screw things up... now if I just had a torque wrench that went up to 174 ft/lbs!!!

Sears has one (944597 25 to 250 ft-lbs) that is reasonably priced. Though, I don't know if it's good enough for Porsche work!

My current one from Sears, has the Ft-lbs reading somewhere in the middle of the scale!! I can't tell if I'm at 30lbs, or 40lbs since the 0 reading ends up somewhere in the middle, not on the number exactly.... not a very good wrench! I need another one!

Yes I do ! Please box up all the 993 parts that go with the pully and I will send you all the right 964 parts that I know you really should have . Yes thats right , your bad old 993 parts for my perfectly good 964 parts . I'm such a good guy , I will even pay for the shipping .
I'm going over to the post office now and wait there for the box , OK ?

Indycam,
Your generosity overwhelmes me ! Wow, to think that a lighthearted remark during a break from work could lead to such an offer.

Unfortunately , I must decline your offer as I have got quite used to that 993 motor.

All the best with your search.
