Default gearbox won't shift into 3rd or 4th gear - UPDATED!

I was at the track today doing some laps with a couple of other guys. One of the other guys (an experienced racer) drove my RSA a few laps and it suddenly would no longer go into 3rd or 4th gear at all. I have reverse, 1st, 2nd, and 5th gears only. I'm wondering if its a problem with the linkage or something. At least I'm hoping its a linkage problem and not an internal gearbox problem. Any thoughts on this?

It is possible that the 13mm bolt that holds the linkage into the transmission shift rod will loosen or fall out, and not permit the "middle gears" to engage. The "outer gears" will still engage because the sideways motion of the shifter will put enough force on the rod to hold it so it will shift properly - but straight forward or backwards will just slide the fitting over the rod so no shifting happens. That's what I'd be banking on. I had this happen in a race once many, many years ago in my 65 911!

If you cannot see anything obvious on the outside related to linkage etc., drain the trans into a clean drain pan and fish around with a magnet looking for any -chunks-, needle bearings or stray pieces. If nothing there, drain the oil from the drain pan into another container and look for anything metal like aluminum flakes or otherwise.

No. The gear selector will not physically move into those positions (3rd and 4th) even with the motor off. Someone mentioned that it might be the "shifter tube" and that I should upgrade it to a 993 shifter tube. I'm trying to get it to a guy today or tomorrow so I can get it on a lift and get the cover off of the bottom so we can look at it.

Without trying to rain on your parade, I've seen this caused by a broken selector fork - requires gearbox removal and strip down to fix. I hope it's just an alignment problem, much easier (and cheaper) to fix.

Update: A local mechanic took the cover off and played with the linkage and got it to go into third and fourth gear, but it is grinding slightly going into 4th now. So it now shifts into all 5 gears but grinds going into 4th. So I took it to a specialist yesterday and they are pulling the transmission out now to open it up and see what's wrong. I'm anxious to see what they find.

Default Update

Talked to the technician this morning. He said it looks like it needs a new 4th gear synchro. He said everything else looks fine. Not too bad, I guess, considering that it could have been worse.

UPDATE: Well, I got the car back. Turns out that the 3rd/4th gear slider and the associated synchro were both damaged. Porsche wanted $850 for a new slider but my technician located a good used one from a source he had which was quite a bit cheaper. I've attached photos of the damaged parts (slider and synchro). On a side note, I'm shocked at the price of a new brass synchro ($125) given that there isn't much to that part!

And the last photo shows the RSA back safe and sound in the garage next to the TR6.

Ouch on the gears.

Good to see it's back in the garage.

The car and transmission have 140K miles on it and its been DE'd quite a bit in its past life. Could have been getting ready to go anyway. No way to know. The good news is that its all fixed now and better than before with an RS LWF and clutch!

So far, its great. Unfortunately, starting about the time I picked up the car at the shop, the weather here deteriorated to rain and now is predicted to start freezing, so I pretty much just drove it home and put it in the garage. But, in the driving I did so far with it, it hasn't acted like its trying to stall or anything. I even did what you're not supposed to do: I had it at a steady 3K rpms with headlights on and AC running and then pushed in the clutch to see if it would stall. It didn't. So far so good. It definitely grabs with more force when you take off from a standstill and it revs up more quickly and freely than before. I can't wait to get some seat time with it once the streets are dry.
