964 RS
Any of you veteran 964 guys know of any 964 Rs's that have been imported into the country. I know of a few race cars but no road cars. I would be interested in what it costs to make DOT compliant.
I am planning a trip to Europe early next year to track down a nice 964 RS
Thanks in advance.

Hello!
You may want to get in touch with Steve Patti in Texas who apparently has done this many times. You can PM me and I will give you his e-mail address offline.
I remember asking the same question about a year or so ago and got the following reply (about a 964 cup - don't think the "regular" RS will be too different):
- - -

Pretty expensive, but you will have a very special car! Good luck!

Joe,
The specialists to look up in Europe for your 964RS are:
UK: Paul McLean at http://www.gtclassics.co.uk/
Germany: Thomas Schmitz at Hermanns & Schmitz (this company works in partnership with Paul McLean to source and import cars into the UK http://www.germansportscars.de/
Germany: www.mobile.de the main online carsourcing site
Germany: http://www.autosalon-singen.de ...petrolhead's heaven!
Netherlands: http://www.wolbert.nl/
Expect to pay £29k - £35 for a nice lhd RS depending on where you find it (at today's prices - next year who knows??? ).
Good luck in your search - they are very few and far between over here now! People are keeping hold of them.

Sorry to disagree with Rich, but you won't get a decent 964RS for £29k any more. I know of at least 3 people who are looking for good cars at the moment and they are expecting to pay more like £35k. Really good cars have gone for more! Traders are paying more than £29k just for stock with good cars! And an average to poor car is going to cost a lot more in the long run.
There is a real shortage at the moment. I certainly wouldn't expect to come over to europe and just find a car. You need to plan ahead and probably have flexibilty in when you travel. I would probably be in contact now with one or more of the specialists mentioned. I personally recommend Paul at GT Classics as he has the connection with Germany.

Sound advice from Simon. RS prices have shot through the roof and the dollar-euro ratio is not doing much good either. Most prices are between 50 and 60.000 euro at this time. In March last year I posted a thread on a 22.000 miles, one owner, never tracked Freisinger prepared RS which was for sale for 40.000 euro. I would expect a similar car to fetch 55.000 euro as a minimum nowadays. Who said cars are a poor investment?

Agree with Thomas Schmidt in Telgte in Germany.
Disagree about autosalon Singen... not in the real game these guys.
Better to look in Germany than UK. (many more in D than GB)
One in Belgium in the P dealer in Liège (Penders Porsche)
Good luck in your search

You're probably right - £35K (and possibly more) is where somebody would be looking at now. I also thought that prices in Germany last summer were a little higher for lhd than in the UK?
For someone in the US (and of course unless they speak fluent German) Paul McLean is the obvious place to start. His association with Thomas in Germany means he tends to know where the cars are and whether they have a story to tell. Also Paul seems to be a very honest and decent guy who has a great reputation in RS circles.
To answer Jean Pierre.. I haven't had any dealings with Autosalon Singen, I just enjoy window shopping at their site every now and then. They always have a fantastic choice of cars of all makes in the showroom and although they are not necessarily RS specialists - they might be worth checking from the US before travelling, especially when RS's are so scarce at the moment. I'd leave no stone unturned if I was travelling all that way and hoping to pick up an RS so easily.

I bought my 964 Cup from Thomas Schmidt directly. He speaks English well, so one can deal with him directly without too much trouble. The car was pretty much as represented.
Bringing in my Cup as a race car was relatively easy. I had to swear in blood never to try and convert it for street, though. Once you go down that path, I think things get a lot more complicated. It probably isn't financially worth doing so, either.
Also, my shipping was ~$1500 from Bremerhaven to Newark. I did not use a container, which shocked many, but I used the same shipping service that BMW uses to ship cars for their Euro Delivery program. They didn't use a container for my Euro Delivery 330i, either. Both cars made the trans-Atlantic journey with nary a scratch. It was fun to pick up my Cup "down at the docks".

Their car was 20K more than the other 4 and had a respray which could be bettered with a vacuum cleaner. Good internet eye candy but not Belgian chocolates!
Agree with Rich... Thomas Schmidt is very honest.

George,
yes it is me. Jeff was saying that we might have to hook up and have a pint or two.
Keep your eye out for me. Cars are hard to find.
Looking forward to meeting you.

Tom Shmidt is a winner. He has been very patient with me. He is trying hard to locate some cars for me. Steve Patti is running the show from the states. If anyone has any interest in going over and getting one of these cars Steve is the guy. He helps with all aspecs of the transaction. He has contacts in Germany and is familiar with the area.
I will keep you guys posted as the journey unfolds. I hope it is a succesfull one. I am spending a ton of $$$ to get over there. I am taking Jeff Gamroth to personally inspect any car. As well as Jeff Smith. These guys are the best. They know everything there is to know about these cars. I would be lost without a great group of people around me.
Keep me posted on any cars that come up in the next couple of weeks.
