Default Slightly OT - Recommend a 911 spec resource?

I was wondering if there was a single resource where you can look up specs on prior to 1990 model 911's. Weight, engine, transmission, etc.

Google....

(sorry... Couldn't resist)

Seriously... What specs in particular are you looking for? I have several Porsche books... I could post the names... It depends on what you are looking for though...

Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" has a lot of that data in it, including engine specs and gear charts.

The original Porsche Technical Specification Book is what you are looking for. They are about $20 when you can find them.

I have a Bentley book for the 964 called "Technical Data Without Guesswork". Check it out here.

Google did not turn up anything useful. Edmunds.com and several others are great for 1990+ as far as weight, engine capacity/power, etc. But prior to 1990 the available online info is pretty limited.

I'll go check out Bruce's book again - it's been a while since I've read it...

Chance ,
Have you looked at " Porsche 911 Red Book 1965 - 1999 " ?
ISBN 0-7603-0723-7 . Was around $20.

Learn everything in that book and you will be an expert/super bore !!

All the best

If your looking for a book then try Marc Bongers's "Porsche Data Book: The definitive reference to specifications and statistics ". It's a hardcover and available at Amazon.com for $35.46.

Nice - thanks for the tips guys!

To be honest I don't know everything I'm looking for yet - but basically, I'd like to compile enough information to be able to easily say something like "yeah, you can interchange all trannys between 87 and 89", for example.

I'd really like to have a 70's or 80's model race car - but since i don't have a big wad of cash I might have to take the build-it route even if it's more expensive in the long run. Start with something totally stock and add only the required safety mods for racing, then start racing and add on the goodies as I go. Knowing a good deal on an old runner or salvage when I see one might come in handy in the process.
