Default Fabspeed Cup Style Airbox warning

The Fabspeed "cup" style airbox cover is missing ribs that would normally stiffen the cover similar to the factory piece possibly because of its manufacturing method, vacuum forming? Without the ribs and because of the thickness of the plastic the two clamps at the very top and bottom will cause the cover to warp and the air-filter element will not seat properly within the airbox. The real problem is that you will only notice this if you happen to remove your engine or live on a dirt road and just happen to clean your intake manifold from an oil overfill. So if anyone here has a Fabspeed "cup" style airbox I would suggest sticking their hands in back of the intake manifold and checking that the filter is seated properly. FYI, the engine vacuum will not push the filter element flush...

I have one of these and yes, you have to take extra care when you fit the cover to ensure that it seals all the way around. It will seal, but you do need to double check to make sure it is installed properly. I run my fingers all the way round to make sure there are no gaps.

When I was running around with this I thought I had it sealing perfectly but after taking a look from the backside with the engine removed i realized that wasn't the case.

Sorry, but your last post is a bit ambiguous! It could be read as

1. after initial fitting it was OK and then subsequently it opened up
or
2. You thought you had fitted properly but a better inspection found that you hadn't

Which leads to the question of whether, with care, this product can be used or not.

Jason ,
Why not cut the top off a standard lid and use a regular paper/oil filter ?The lid frame will seal the filter.

Thats if you really want this set up. We wont go there again !!

All the best

The piece is just a dyed/colored thermoplastic there is no carbon fiber reinforcement. We probably wouldn't have this problem (lack of stiffness) if there was.

I've always used the stock factory air filter and after I noticed this problem decided to just stick with the factory cover. If I see a factory cover for sale on eBay I will buy it and dremel tool a cup cover.

I didn't want to wait for one on ebay and did mine. I wouldn't suggest using the paper filter once the hole is cut....

That's one problem I didn't have and I've driven through the winter with snow packed on the spoiler, monsoon season , etc. but with an RS3.8 type rear wing.

Moisture and all kind of dust/dirt. Not that I would want anybody to have dirt in their engine but lets face it; the filter becomes exposed and is prone to suck anything and everything that can get to it.

I am not saying it's a No No but I'm just extra precautious.
