Indy

I am in a difficult position at the moment, I have 2 choices,

Firstly to send the DME to the states for diagnosis and repair, total cost including postage and insurance about £400.

Secondly buy one from a breakers yard, I have been quoted about the same figure.

either way does not guarantee that my car will start , although i am fairly confident i have done all the tests you never can be sure, you have not eliminated everything.

Also I do not have the money to speculate with at the moment, i am currently on embarrassingly low wages, If I knew 100% i would send it off straight away and get it fixed.

If only I could get hold of another DME unit just to test and eliminate everything else.

I suppose I will have to make a decision soon, my worse nightmare would be to send it away for repair only for my car to still not start.

yours undecidingly

Dave,

There are a couple of places in the UK where you can send your ECU for assessment/repair. Try Camco in Warrington, 01925 445688 (they don't have a website as far as I know), or the ECU Doctor 01752 346437 here . The ECU Doctor may be a better bet, they're based in Plymouth. They charge £35 to test the ECU including return carriage, and £90 plus parts for repair. Best to ring them first to check that they can test your particular ECU. I know Camco repair Bosch units, and there is an official Bosch repair centre somewhere in the UK.

Dave,
Buy yourself a copy of 911& Porsche World in Smiths ?. Look at the ads in the back .
Going rate for a good 964 DME in the UK is £250 tops . £400 is mug territory !!

There is a guy Crispin Manners ?? who operates from the Exeter area . Might be worth giving him a call ?? Maybe someone on Rennlist has his number ?
No affiliation etc , etc , just seen some good reports in mags.

Good luck

Barry

Thanks for the ECU doctor info, I have just spoken to him and its very optimistic, he said if he cant fix it then at least I get to have a free diagnosis , He seems like a really nice guy, very helpful.

For the first time in ages i am more positive about getting my car back on the road, I did not really fancy sending it off to the states, although Loren has been very helpful.

Geoff

I phoned the breakers who advertise in that mag and they quoted me £400 exchange on a second hand unit , I dont know if that included tax and postage.

I would like to thank everyone who has helped me over the last few weeks< I just hope this Doctor guy is the answer

Dave,
If you need an ECU let me know. £400 is paying for an ad with picture !!

Good luck getting your 964 fixed.

Before i go any further, I have been told to look for a scope signal at 47 and 48 , I got the correct reading in volts and ohms , but should i have got a trace at 47 ?

Thanks

47 is the signal ground on M2.1 so no signal. If you adjust the scope timebase /
trigger while looking at 48 you will see the crank sensor signal with " missing tooth " . Loren probably has a pic of this on his site ?

Have you taken the DME out of the car and had a look at it ? Damp is bad !!

Geoff

i was just making double sure about pin 47 , i got a trace as for how to use the scope properly is beyond me but i definately got something so i assume "something" is ok considering i got the correct voltage and ohms.

I opened the DME and everything was bone dry , with no obvious signs of anything wrong.

I have now got the DME wrapped up ready for posting tommorrow so for £30 i will have an answer as to whether it is the DME or not.

Its not the ECU , just had a call back to say the ECU performed perfectly on the test rig.

Dont know if thats good or bad news ?

Any how i get a remap and all the parameters set to within 5 % of origanal settings if they are out slightly.

The guy told me to double check the earth wires, pins 2 and 19

Does anyone know the earthing points where these wires go to.

Confused , I am now

I have just tested the earth wires and everything ok,

I have just tested pins 47 & 48 again

I could not get a voltage reading this time around, where does the flywheel sensor get its voltage from ?

the ohms test was OK 517ohms and I got a good trace on the oscilloscope but no voltage at all.

David,
Its an inductive sensor so doesnt need power . Its a generator !

"I got a good trace on the oscilloscope but no voltage at all."
Do you know how to read the scope trace for the voltage ?
