Hi all,
Only good news this morning!!. The Porsche was well behaved on the 40 minute commute, no repeat of the horrbile erratic idling nor any loss of power. I'll report back in a week or so.
Thanks to everyone who chipped in above, I owe you all a beer if you every find yourself down my way (I'm a keen homebrewer btw )
Cheers

AB-Oz: this sounds suspiciously like a problem I had about a year ago. someone on this list or another one suggested I simply remove the negative battery cable and clean both ends of it, including where the negative cable connects to the body. This cured all problems. It's simple, easy and free. Worth a try if your problem recurs?

I've been following this thread closely as my 90 C4 also experienced erratic engine hesitation at around 2500-3000rpm, while idling was stable. I've studied the TSB diagrams regarding modifying the AFM plug and distancing it from the vent hose to solve the problem. But since I could not drop the engine to gain access to the plug, I covered the plug with duct tape to isolate it from the vent hose. I am not sure if my crude remedy would really solve the hesitation (comments welcomed), but after driving my car with the covered plug, the hesitation seem to disappear. i wil keep you guys posted if my crude remedy does work or not.
