I think it's the mileage of the car that they are limiting, so if a mate then racks up miles on it the mileage limit on the car will exceed the limit and hey presto no insurance. On the initiation of the policy you would have declared the mileage of the car, any subsequent years would just add to the initial figure, they don't need to know each year unless you change your policy or limit ! Remember it's the car they are covering YOU can do as many miles as you like so long as you don't exceed the limit on the vehicle! I.e. drive others cars on the 3rd party cover usually provided.

I had to, and then every year thereafter.

Done through Norton Heretige PCGB limited 3k/yr full european breakdown, PCGB trackday and legal cover all for£440/yr.

Every year I have to phone up and confirm all details, any changes and the valuation.

Kevin.

Just today transferred my policy from my 72 to the new 92. I use Hagerty. So far, so good. I had to negotiate my way up to a 5000 mile a year limit. This was based on two extended trips to a car venue each year. Normally they would limit it to 2500 miles. All of which is really counts for little as I have never disclosed the mileage on any of my 3 911s that have been insured through them. They simply wanted pics. Again-hardly fool proof as I could send them pics of any number of cars like mine.

Must be based on honesty and fairplay. I like that.

Is it expensive to go to an unlimited policy in the UK and are these cars more expensive to insure than say a vw gti in the uk?

Just curious.

I'm not sure the insurance is more than a VW GTI. But - in the UK we have NCD (No Claims Discount) which reduces your premium by up to 65% if you haven't made claims in the last few years. This is one of the reasons it's so expensive to insure cars when you're young - you are a higher risk (no experience) but also have no NCD.

Because the 964 is most people's second car, their NCD is already used on their main daily car. That makes it much more expensive if you insure unlimited. When I bought my 964 I had no previous NCD as I'd never insured a car in my own name. For an unlimited mileage it was costing me about £1400 a year I think. My limited mileage renewal came through this morning - 5,000 miles (although it doesn't seem to mention that on the renewal anywhere!) with no NCD (since it's on my main car) : £400.

Well - to change the subject of the thread slightly (I'm allowed since I started it!) - I called A Manning for a quote but I don't think it will suit me.

Their classic policy will not allow commuting - and although I don't use the 964 to go to work very often, I still want to be able to. In addition, they will not allow my g/f on the policy because she has to have had at least 5k miles experience in a 200bhp plus car. Even with those conditions (and having to join PCGB) they are a bit more expensive than my renewal - so time for some more phone calls.

So your safe driver discounts only apply to the first vehicle? Interesting, but that does help me understand why the limited mileage stuff is so popular. I'd never even heard of a limited mileage policy before reading this board.

Thanks Dave.

Dave, try Asset Trust (details back of PCGB Mag) - most excellent. Mine has 3K limited mileage, £250XS for £315 + I had a major claim last year (over £2K) after I droped a Dyson Cleaner on the bonnet

Dave, on my limited mileage insurance I DO get a NCD (No Claims Discount). This was with Lancaster, but they upped the premium this year so I change to a company called A-plan. My NCD was transfer to the new policy, I have already accrued 10 year, nice!

Actually - I will try Lancaster again. I was with them before, and I think the mileage limit was 6K rather than 5K. I moved last year when they were expensive, but worth giving them a call. Will try A-Plan as well - but 3K is too few miles.

A-plan said they couldn't get anywhere near my renewal quote (£410).

Apparently it's possible to fit a switch that interupts the power supply from the speedo sensor.
