Default Newbie question, the ever popular fuel odor gremlin

I’m a new 964 owner. Recently purchased, ’91, Black on Black, 64 k miles (yes, I will post pictures). I am plagued, like many, with the mysterious, recurring fuel vapor odor in the trunk. I have installed a new fuel filler and cap, scrubbed the carpet, etc. Odor returns after a few days. Sound familiar? The problem renders the trunk useless, and just not using the trunk seems like a bad option.

It's a great car, and as I did not over pay, am willing to spend some money to fix the problem. I have reviewed the many posts here and on other sites and am considering my next move (charcoal filter, pressure test, etc). To narrow down my options, I have a simple set of questions.
1) Does any 964 owner reading this site NOT have this problem.
2) Has anyone with the problem successfully eliminated it, allowing the trunk to be used for storage? If so, what steps did you take?
3) Has anyone with the fuel odor problem taken the drastic step of replacing the entire fuel tank with either an after market tank (Fuel Safe) or another 964/993 tank? What was the result?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the "Do It Yourself" thread about fuel filler neck replacement in the 964 section of the DIY Area here at rennlist...

I don't have a 964 yet but was reading about some of the fixes last night, hopefully it will help you out...

I had a similar problem with gas odor from the trunk area. Only time odor was present was driving with tank 3/4 to Full and during some hard cornering.

I discovered my tank shut-off valve (#10 in diagram) was cracked and the previous owner used silicone to try and fix. Cost for #9 & #10 was about $40, took about 1 hr to do and no more gas odor in the trunk.

#10 - 964 201 175 01 - Shut-off Valve

I had a fuel smell.

I replaced the fuel cap and fuel filler neck then rented a carpet cleaner for the trunk carpets. I also washed the entire trunk inside.

I have not had a fuel smell since.

Now the car just smells like oil and leather - the way Ferry intended.

On hot days I get the gas smell. The hotter the day, the stronger the smell. All winter it's gone, but first hot day, it's back. I've replaced the filler neck, and cap. While changing the fuel pump, I did find some "dampness" below it, and will be changing fuel lines for my next attempt on the smell.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Reading his post he has already replaced the filler neck.
I replaced my filler neck as well. Still get the smell but not as badas it used to be.

Well, I had fuel smell, and like everyone else, replaced the fuel filler neck, and the cap. And it remained.

Then one day, when I was tightening the cap, the internal plastic part gave way, and the red cap part separated from the brass screw part. Crap!

When I got home, I was able to unscrew the brass part, and still having my old original cap, put that on.

And since that day, the smell has been gone. I have no idea what that means, and I am pretty sure my experience will not apply to any other 964 on the planet, but I would wager that the initial problem was the filler pipe, but that the new cap and pipe just did not mate up properly, but the old cap/new pipe did.

Now if anyone has a solution for the occasional dead spot in throttle response at just barely open throttle, coasting along downhill, I am all ears! ;-)

Not to hijack, but did that work?

Fuel smell here cured with the easy fix of a new gasket for the cap. My mechanic keeps a stack of 'em in stock, right next to his pile of rear blower tube resistors...

Yes Darryl. Not a hint of it. Of course my mileage suffers. Sorry for the hijack.
