Default ebay deal on 964?

item 140000353031

Very cheap buy it now! Doesn't say much for resale values!

And that leaves a lot of cash to sort it if needed.

Note the 92 engine

There's no distributor vent kit. There's no A/C.

It has aluminium intakes, not plastic. That occured in June of 1990. So, the instakes are not from a 92 engine, but I suppose they could have changed the block, but not the intakes? Interesting.

Could be a good deal, but I tend to be a skeptic. I think in general that the price and the quality of an item tend to be aligned.

Wouldn't argue with you there but at that price you would have a lot of splash let to fix it up how you wanted.

I would cry if thats all i could get for mine!

It seems there is an interesting diversion of price on the 964 lately. I've noticed the ask price seems to be coming down, yet there is a thread on "where are all the (nice) 964s" which, I would think, would drive prices up.

At the same time, I've had a few folks approach me recently with rather high "offers". Not real offers, mind you, but comments like "I'd be happy to take that off your hands for $$$".

It seems to me that prices are coming down, in general, but that the price of "good" cars is going up!

All very subjective, of course, and coming from a 964 owner, ta' boot!

Cheers,
Dave

I think very nice cars are coming on the market less and seem to command a higher price. Especially coupes with 5 speeds. This car could be a deal but looks a little fishy to me. I would ask lots of questions. I don't understand how someone could have the resources to swap an engine but not have the distributer vent installed? Why were all the pictures taken in the rain? Why the old manifolds on a '92 engine? Seems like this might be a fair price unless the car is much nicer than it appears to be.

It's interesting that the compressor bracket is there though. Maybe the '92 car had a/c and they just left the bracket.

As you say, lots of questions on this one. There certainly doesn't seem to have been much preparation. Sloppy owner probably means sloppy maintenance too.

It looks like it used to have A/C - there's a wire on the right side that looks like it might be the compressor switch wire...

It's not visible on the blower tube. They all seem to get installed in a slightly different spot I guess but it would seem unlikely that someone would go to the trouble to conceal it.

The steering wheel is on the wrong side!

That alone drops the price by $10K

I'm pretty sure that every vent kit pic I've seen has had the hose above the rear light vent hose. I believe it's because it's difficult to get a drill below the existing hose. I think they tend to be vented into the primary distributor, too.

Of course, it could be installed low and venting into the secondary.

I was assuming . . . should have said it appears to have no vent kit!

Cheers,
Dave

I think the dist vent absence is the least of my concerns about this car.
As well as owning up to only partial service history, the car is likely ready for lots of big work - it will doubtlessly be leaking oil heavily, the clutch on its last legs, the owner will have been advised it needs a rebuild, and so time to 'get shut of it'. Another reason for a used replacement motor to be fitted would be rear end damage..

However, pre-rebuild, mine's probably only in reality worth about 11 or 12 in the current climate..its those prefacelift 996's dragging the market down!
