Default Do you remember the Top Gear episode where they had the 3 cars on the beach?

....well.....I have spent a few hours on a beach with my car and I can tell you that it is even more fun than it looks...!!!! Going sideways for 10 seconds at 50-60mph followed by donuts and so on....what a scream....

On the way back on the road I had to stop and pressure wash approx. 5kgs of sand off the wheels as the car was vibrating so badly due to the imbalance.....and I have now pressurewashed off almost all the sand from underneath...wow...I am going back for more this week...yeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh

oh, and I have some shots - but they are RAW format so I need to get home to develop them first....

Fun! Does the spraying sand do much damage to the paint?

I can't believe you would do that. Aren't you worried about all those grains of sand getting in to your suspension bushings and calipers and bearings? And literally sand blasting your paint.

Christer - this brings back memories for me.

Probably 15 years ago, a Ford Sierra Cosworth and an Escort RS Turbo (both superchipped) on flat sands in Wales, somewhere very near Aberdovey. There were some kids with model cars, so we took the real cars onto the sands.

And couldn't get over 40mph on the way home - one of the back wheels on the Cosworth was packed full with sand. We had to take the wheel off!

Great fun indeed

I did the same thing years ago in a 240z.It was about as much fun as I ever had in a moving car. The problem was the sand.Almost 5 years later when I sold the old girl I was still finding sand in her. Use some one's car you don't like.

and the SALT WATER!!! I know when I get my boat out of the brackish water in the delta and into the salt water I just can't get rid of the salt residue. It just keeps coming back.
Maybe you guys get so much salt on the raods it doesn't matter?

I'm not adverse to driving the car hard... but on a beach in salt and sand always seemed like, well, abuse! Can I report you to some sort of p-car abuse hotline?!

Sounds like loads of fun though.

There's a beach on Lake Huron that's long enough to drive on, not far from where I grew up. It's fresh water, of course, but people used to blast along the beach, making fools of themselves in the cars, and then, in those less enlightened days, wash their cars at the water's edge, using the lake water. This was the 60's, man, nobody thought twice about it - and heck, we drank the water. Rooster tails of sand. Silly fun. Of course, we all know better now.

Hey, it's a car, it's made to be fun, what the hell. As long as it's not hurting anybody...

But it's not designed for off-road use, and soft sand is about the worst off-road environment there is. Dune buggies, IIRC, had specially designed components that were designed to keep the sand out. Even my old Toyota 4x4's owner's manual warned against driving in sand. I would think driving any road car on the sand would have disastrous consequences.
