I installed hot water baseboard in my garage off of a zone on my house furnace. I keep it set at 70 degrees during the winter and haven't noticed a substantial increase in home heating oil usage. I did replace my garage doors with some that are R22 insulated doors and that helps considerably. To be fair though, I did replace the furnace at the same time, so the efficiency of the new furnace is proabably offset by the heating of the garage.

I have a forced air gas heater similar to Marc Shaw's. I can't remember the name of the brand. My heater works very well. It can heat the garage from 45 degrees F to 65 in about 30 minutes. My garage is a 3 car attached to the house. Its walls, ceiling and garage doors are insulated. The gas bill has been acceptable too.

My recommendation is to get one. Working in a cold space is not pleasant.

One thing you might want to do is get a low temperature thermostat. These are different from normal house thermostats and allow you to keep much lower temperatures for maintainance. I'm a retired homebuilder and have put many such units in garages. You usually don't want house temperatures in the garage anyway.

CC3; we've been quoted about $1500 for a new construction install, $1800 for existing home install.

CC3 - mine was CDN$1800 installed with 1 year free tank rental.

Michael - mine does not go below 10 C - can I get one lower and/or a set-back (programmable) thermostat?

Thanks,
Marc

Hawk, If I remember correctly they go down to about 38 deg. F. Obviously to prevent freezing. I'll check some old invoices.

Still working on my garage, but when I have the services run up to it, it will have gas forced air heat AND a central air unit! Good thing is I can do this myself, bad thing is it's taking me forever.

My neighbor has one at 45, but not lower. If you can find anything, I'll take 2. PM me if you find something. Thanks

I installed a 100,000 btu Lennox natural gas unit heater. It does a good job of heating my garage (24 x 38) It was $2900 cdn.

However I doubt anybody else lives anywhere that would require this much heat in their garage.

If anyone finds a nice digital thermostat that is capable of being set at 0C I'de love to buy one. Right now I have to tilt my mercury one on an angle to get it low enough.

Heres a pic of my heater after install as I was insulating the walls.

I love the Canadian content - "I just need to warm the garage up to freezing, is that asking too much?"

cheers Barry, will have a look for that, is it just plugged into the wall, and is it floor standing?

Hawk, Just call your one of your local HVAC shops. They should be readily available.

Paul,

I too nealry bought a de-humidifier for my garage this winter, it's an old building with a damp floor, and I reckoned B&Q had the best selection and prices, followed by Machine Mart.

As for a heater, I just use a little Clarke propane powered blower affair, also from Machine Mart. Cheap, quick and effective, but like all gas powered heaters, it of course producues water vapour.

Anyway, this thread reminded me I'd run out of gas, so just back from the garden centre with two full bottles!
