I had my car professionally transported over 2,000 miles and they used "over the tire" tie downs. They told me that's all they use, as it eliminates stress on the car and tiedowns and it allows the car to "ride" with the bumps in the road.
I personally think this is the way to go.

Do do this, though, I assume one would need a set of D rings mid-way on the bed, right? I can't think of a way to strap down an over-the-tire setup without that.

My mistake, they probably were 2x6s or even 2x8. I should have just said "lumber".

If any of you would like additional info. on the "over-the-tire" tie downs that we , Intercity Lines, use shoot me a p.m..You can retrofit them to your own trailers and eliminate the hassles and potential problems of tying the car down with chassis straps.

Dave: Do you tie the straps down to D-rings or E-track?

I'm happy with the Autometrics hooks for the rear, but my car is so low the front is an issue and I really dislike the "through the wheels" straps. I've considered the over the tire straps for the front, but it would be difficult to get access to D-rings (again due to car clearance). I seems E-track would be a bit simpler.

Intercity Lines

We use the series "E" track with our straps. Both the track and "over-the-tire" tie-down straps can be purchased from Vulcan Chain Corp. in Detroit. Their number is 313-935-3013. Don't think they have a website.

Ask them for the Intercity spec. tie-downs and galvanized "E" track. The galvanized track looks better and last longer than the green painted track they also sell.

When you say "track", what are you talking about?

Intercity Lines

The series "E" track is what holds the tie-down-straps to the trailer floor. The strap runs from the track, up and over the wheel and then back down to the track.
