Default hard shifting when cold

Has anyone ever noticed your car being hard to shift when the temp outside is cold (say in the high 20s) then once the transmission gets warmed up everything is fine. I noticed this the other day and was just wondering if this is normal or the hint of a problem. Any help is greatly appreciated. Brian 90 C2

yeh, mine always shifts hard the first time from 1st to 2nd gear when it's very cold out (below 35 or so)

i usually double clutch it just that once. after i hit second gear it's fine from there on out. it's just getting it into second that first time..

Thats exactly where the hard shift occured from 1st to 2nd, I usually don't drive the car when it's been put away for winter but decided to drive it the other day. Thanks for the response. Brian

Yes- every stick shift car I've had acts in this way in the very cold. Please make sure to not force the transmission- be easy with it and realize it needs more time between shifts for a couple of minutes. Don't idle the car to warm it up- drive it to warm it up, and be easy with her- both shifting, and no high revs until oil is up to temp.

It doesn't get nearly that cold here in Northern Cal but I can still feel the difference until the oil warms up.

Most manufacturers state that you shouldn't idle the car to warm it up that you should just start it and drive it gently until warm. I think they say that because excessive idling can contaminate the oil with gas.

Besides, you don't want someone stealing your car!

Most of the engine wear occurs at startup and while the engine is cold where the tolerances are tight. The longer it takes to warm up to operating temperature, the more wear. If you drive it easy, it will warm up faster.

mine used to behave like that. i changed the oil to redline syn and it made a world of difference

For the record my Tiptronic car also has sluggish changes during cold weather but is ok after a couple of miles.

Ditto - typical... shifting is a little "balky" until it warms up - then it's "silky" with just the right touch of "notchy" :-)

Just think how lucky we are- Ferrari's (at least all but the most recent models) need to be driven to get the gear case wamred up all the time, not just the cold days of winter

I posted a post recently on the 993 board regarding finding the perfect transaxle fluid for our 911s. After experienmenting with Mobil1, redline, Dino oil, Swepco 201, I think I found a good solution. Look for a post title "gear oil for our 993".
