Default Why a 964 over 993

Hi Guys,

Looking at aupgrading to a 964 or 993 from a SC.

It is going to be a manual and preferably a coupe, I'm follically challenged and the top of my head does'nt need the sun.

I'd apprecuate your opinions ( apart from obvious that they are cheaper) as to the reasons for opting for ownership of a 964.

Thanks in anticipation and greetings from Australia.

Welcome to the board, Jim!
For me, the 964 is best because of the looks, power, and feel. The 993 is unfortunately plagued by the air injection problems which are starting to show up in the masses as the cars reach the 40-60,000 mile range - buyer beware, especially if you need to smog check a car to register it!!! Plus those headlights are ugly!

Yeah, headlights are ugly. The 964 looks just right.

I think the dingos prefer to attack 993's, so you would be ahead of the game there....

I chose the 964 over the 993 because I wanted OBD I. Since the 993's were only OBD I in '95, and it was very hard for me to find a '95 I liked, I chose a 964. One thing that I love about it is almost exactly why some people dont like it... because it has that classic look, but still incorporates some newer technology to make it and excellent daily (nearly daily for me) driver.

I love the 993's though. May still purchase one some day...

Having both, no good reason to get 964 over 993 other than price. 993 just does everything better.

I have to disagree with Gary R. that the 964's are faster. I have yet to be passed by a 964 in the past 4 years at any DE.

That being said I am probably going to buy an RSA for Club Racing in the next year or so mainly because the RSA is easier to setup for the track.

I wonder when will the valve guide issue rear its ugly head on the 993s.

Blocked SAI maybe the symptom of valve guides beginning to wear.

When I was in SF over Christmas, saw a nice white 993 convertible....but it was smoking blue smoke while idling at the red light. Felt sorry for the owner.

To me, the 964 was the last of the 911's. All the newer ones have lost the classic shape! You can spend the extra money it'd cost to get a standard 993 into making the 964 an even better car.

Wouldn't disagree with Andy about the classicness of the 964.

However, I past a 997 last night and thought it looked stunning. and it was a lot like the 993 with those round lights.

Maybe its just a taste think, I like the 993 shape. I think the 964 wings and headlights are more classic.

If I had the cash then I would be driving a 993.

I've owned both -- no question in my mind the 993 is a solid step up. Looks, performance, resale, interior room, suspension, speed etc. If you go the 993 route, stick with a 95' -- you'll avoid the dreded CEL issue. Good luck.

All depends upon how much cash you have to play with. I would take a good 964 over a crappy 993 any day. The fact that you are willing to look aboth greatly increases the chances of finding something good. And yes I do miss seeing the tops of the wings! It was the first thing I noticed when I got mine.

Cheers,

David

This comes up once a month or so, and runs and runs. 964 owners usually prefer their 964's, 993 owners wandering onto the board likewise. Its diff'rent strokes stuff.

For me, the new rear suspension and easy valve adjustment seem to be the 2 main improvements over the 964. Not enough to make up for the 968 look at the front and an extra 10 grand, in my own personal assessment. I recently drove a C2S, and it felt significantly heavier at backroads speeds, perhaps cos of the turbo running gear. Would come into its own at higher speeds, maybe.

Porsche never goes back wards - the newer the model the better the car - hello, flame throwers - however as a revisionist and 16 year owner of 964 I am in love with the traditional esthetics that have - ABS, a heater that works, and a performance that is 100% competitive with to days performance cars - in the UK you have to spend shedloads of money to do what a 964 was doing 16 years ago - ignoring the semi rally cars
- 964 with bilsteins, springs, LWT fly wheel, drilled air box, k&n and by-pass pipe is creating an RS touring spec car with the benefits of a standard interior, electric windows and roof.
As good a fun, daily driver, high performance road car as you are ever likely to find.
It is testament to its quality that it is competitive in every way at 16 years of age - 16 years before i bought my car ( 1989 ) would have taken me to 1973 and the era of the RS - what other car from 1973 was competitive in 1989 and similarly what car from 1989 is competitive to-day ?
