Get a steel open lug nut and put it on your existing wheel. How much lug is sticking out? My guess is none, and that would be the safe size of spacer to add IMO. Replace the lugs (within reason) with longer ones adding the equivalent spacer size up to about 6mm. Beyond that you need to get the spacers with built in lug bolts..

A whole selection of spacers can be found here.

Anyone have a shot of what a car with 21/28 mm spacers on it would look like?

Atgani, thanks for the feedback on the bolt-on spacers. I spoke to Pelican and they never heard of any problems with the bolt-on spacers they sell.

Gary, my next purchase is a set of the open end lug nuts to see how much thread I have now.

Marc, thanks for the site...

Another question...If I extend the wheel out about 1 inch or more (24mm +) , it will sit directly under the rim of the wheel well or extend beyond the rim. Is there a problem pushing the wheel out under or outside of the wheel well? The car is lowered (Bilstein HD and HR Springs) so how good are the shocks/struts to keep the wheel from hitting the wheel well rim? Assuming I stay away from pot holes at freeway speeds...

Pictures of wheels with wider spacers will be helpful....

Thanks...

Or you can just buy a nice set of 18"x9.5 (R) and 18"x8"(F) Fikse's and bolt them right on with Michelin PS2 265(R) and 225(F)!

Gary and Atgani,

Thanks for the pictures, awesome cars. I just picked up my lowered 964 today and all I can say is WOW. It is so tight around turns and looks great. I now have a better idea of how wide I can go with spacers. If I measure from the outside edge of the rear tire straight up to the inside of the rim, I get around 1/2 inch or about 12.8mm. The front is much tighter and I may get by with 6mm.

Another question, I can't tell from the photos but where does your tire sit in relationship to the rim. Is the outside tire edge inside of the rim, directly under the rim or does the tire actually stick a little outside of the rim?

Anyone else can chime in here...thanks...

Depends on what brand of tyre you're running.

I have a '91 C2 with 17 inch Boxster Twists on it ... 55 offset on all wheels.

I installed 6mm spacers on all wheels with stock lug nuts. I then ordered open steel lug nuts and installed them and boy was I surprised at what I saw ... I immediately took off the spacers and will only put them on after I change out the lugs for longer ones. There was not enough bite on the lugs as far as I was concerned ... YMMV.

No matter what you do, a set of open steel lugs nuts are priceless when it comes to actually seeing what you may have or have not.

Slappy,

Thanks for the advice. I have been reading about the need to go to longer studs. I plan to purchase a set of open lugs to see how much room I have now.

How difficult is it to replace the studs? Any directions online with photos?
