Default "964 Prices"...How much has been spent since...

After Jeremy Pinsly’s great "964 Prices" thread that many have responded to well... Yesterday, after reading the print-out on our initial purchase prices and our assessments on the condition at the time of purchase, I flipped the coin to see the other side… How much has been spent since...

How much has been spent up until now and the assessment today, on the overall condition using the same scale…

I will only add up the major repairs, parts and accessories that I have paid invoices for. In my case I will add the repainting/refit costs as well… Here I go, I have not done this calculation yet so, I shall share my emotions, as I always have with you guys/gals at rennlist.com in the past…

This numbers are true…*

5394€..80,000 klm service and parts, purchase TUV control, etc,
0191€..battery/acid
0320€..wind deflector,
1600€..engine repairs/oil leaks, joints, etc,
0257€..car cover,
4412€..cup wheels/Pirelli
0570€..fuel tank hoses/etc,
1746€..starter/etc,
0438€..under fender plastics,
4234€..boge shocks/struts/alignment/steering rack
3200€..brake callipers/disc/sensors/protect/etc,
0044€..battery trickle charger,
0740€..becker/i-pod radio, pieces,
0086€..engine bay decals,
2300€..soft top from calif/installed,
1140€..soft top cover,
0104€..soft top misc, pieces,
0491€..head lights, pieces,
0359€..side windows, pieces,
1481€..soft top misc, pieces,
5300€..repaint/refit a-z,
0785€..tint wind screen,
1753€..repaint/refit misc, pieces,
1833€..repaint/refit misc, pieces,
0082€..porsche badge,
_______
38,860 €..Totals, in major repairs, parts and accessories…*($46,632)
24,000 €..Purchase price in Germany…*($28,800)
_______

62,860 €
..Totals, plus purchase price,
00,750 €..Registration in France,
_______
63,610 EUROS.. Total to date !!!!!.....*($76,332)!!!!!..... *(€1.00 = $1.20)

In spite of my assessment on my 911/964 which is now a 10 out of 10, I am in a state of shock to say the very least!!.. Not only have I found out that it’s three years ago at not four since I purchased my Porsche in Germany, but I really had no idea where I stood investment wise…
I have often said that I will keep this Car until the day I say "bye-bye Earth" , but these calculations confirm my words… I’ve invested too much in this special Sports car, I am obliged to carry on… Many times I have also said that a Porsche 911/964 is a long term proposition… I now believe my own words…

So, if you have an hour to calculate the same, perhaps many of us would be interested to read "Your Bottom Line", I know I would like to see how much your weekend/second car totals up to…
Thanks for sharing the shock with me, and my words are true… Phew… (to say the very least)...
Marc.

Well, you've made me feel a bit better! I added my costs up some time last year, and I think it was somewhere around £20K in 4 years. It's probably gone up slightly since then but the last year was fairly cheap - so I've spent less than you.

On the other hand, you have had a repainted car and that's a big plus. More of my costs than I would have liked went on servicing - I had several bills which were the wrong side of £2K.

It's interesting that you say the amount you have spent is what ensures you will keep it. For me, that was what stopped me trading it in for a 993. But it's also one of the main reasons I did decide to sell. I no longer want to spend such a significant amount on my car - and although I know you can run them for much less (new wheels etc. are hardly essential!) - the problems with rebuilds etc. a few people have needed recently made me realise that for me - the fun of owning the car no longer justified the cost.

Ok your really bringing me down man....if these cars are so great why am i gonna have to spend an extra 40000 dollars on top of the purchase cost to have a nice one???? My dad has a BMW M3 that has 265000 miles on it and has never spent one penny on the car, i may have to go in that direction.

Mine has an easy 40k cdn in bills, with another 10k going into it as we speak.

Porsches are expensive hobbies.

I routinely spend $7-15,000 CDN on reconditioning BEFORE putting a 964 up for sale in my dealership.

I am doing a complete "case splitting" rebuild on a 964 engine as we speak.................that'll be approximately $10K............tires $1K...........pads and rotors $1.5K..............clutch $2.5K............etc........etc...........etc...........

That is also why these cars, when offered for sale, can vary from $25K CDN to $57K CDN...........it's all condition, condition, condition..........

Marc, outstanding! Your car is truly fantastic. I think the rest of us are willing to live with a few little issues here and there to save some money, but you've exercised all the demons.

I'd love to see it some day - if you're ever taking a trip to So California, throw it on a boat and give me a call, will ya?

If I think I would have to spend that kind of money on mine just for street use, I would sell it quickly and cut my loses. Doesn't make good investment sense unless all of the following four conditions existed: 1) I absolutely could not live without it because it was irreplaceable, 2) I had descretionary funds that I could either put into this car or have one hell of a party and not think twice about it,
3) I knew an Arab Prince that would pay me $100,000 for it since they absolutely love classic cars and my C4 would do great in the sand, and 4) I was going thru a divorce and I would rather throw the money into my Porsche just to **** off my disgruntled wife instead of giving it to her and her lawyer.

If this is the case then why does everyone say....... "oh you need to buy a really nice example and just go ahead and spend the money cause if you dont youll have a nightmare in repair bills" , Sounds to me based on what you guys are saying is that i should just buy a piece of shiot for around $15000 and then have it rebulit from the ground up at least then id have a near new car that is gonna work for a while. Were those "nice" examples that you bought ???

Jerry,

I have to admit - only about US$4000 has been spent on maintenance and "necessary" work in the last year since I bought mine.

The rest has been on performance upgrades, track-prep., and cosmetic enhancements.

You can do it FAR more cheaply -- it can be as expensive as you want it to be but it does not have to be.

Buy the nicest, newest you can afford and plan on spending US$2000 - 3000/year on upkeep (less if you are handy with a wrench). Once you get hooked though, you'll get sucked down that slippery slope of upgrades and mods. like the rest of us.

Wow! I'll give a near opposite experience- I have a low mileage car which I drive about 3K miles per year. Most I've had to spend at once was $800 for the tuneup, a set of tires probably about the same amount of money, and again about the same amount of money for CD player, new speakers and amp. This over the course of several years- average per year cost is probably about $1k at this point, but a radio upgrade and new tires aren't needed every year of course.

Just throwing in my comment to balance this thread before we scare off every potential 964 owner

When I had my C2 (my daily driver) most of the money were spent on performance upgrades & peace of mind replacements. The total in parts, before I sold her, added up to approx. $7,700 not including my DIY labor. It was really hard to resist "not" upgrading her.
