Question More headlight stuff

Daniel Stern Lighting has suggested that, instead of spending 400+ bucks on Hella H4s, that one get the 356/VW headlight bucket from JC Whitney <http://makeashorterlink.com/?A1802228C> for $50 and put the Cibie 7" H4s in them, all at about 2/3 the cost of the Hella setup, including bulbs, relays, wiring, etc.

Has anyone tried this? Opinions?

Further, the bucket JC sells has a chrome trim ring. An unplated/unpainted one'd be far nicer. Any knowledge? (I have asked the 356 people separately).

Thanks!

I'd be interested in the results. I had Cibie H4s in an RX7 way back when in 1980. By far, the best headlight I have used. Great on low beams, white light and a good pattern. Awesome on high beams.

Daniel Stern Lighting tells me that it is a drop-in. Further, that the stock trim rings fit. I will try to attach the pic he sent me:

What are those big ugly screws on the side of the trim ring for?

Not dead certain, but maybe they're just the caps that are always there, with a trick of the light making them look so prominent. The JCW description says the adjusters are at 4 and 8, which you can just make out, so the old ones wouldn't be needed. If they could be filled, rather than capped...might look OK...and you couldn't beat the price.

The black caps on the red rings look like the original rubber adjustment plugs that are on the 964 - that are sometimes painted over- these look just like hte wweere left as plain rubber - If they are not needed then they, as Darry l said, could be plugged and then painted - you could move the holes to the 4 and 8 o'clock position to facilitate the new adjustment positions. This is very interesting option. You use a standard Cibie 7" light - with what lense ???

Has anyone else done this? I'd like to see more pics.
I have sent Daniel Stern an email about it, but in the meantime, wouldn't mid hearing from those that have done it.
