Default Easy way to get fault codes from DME?

A lot of ALDL/OBD1 cars (88ish-95ish) have a feature where if you turn the ignition on (not start the car), fully press the accelerator several times within a certain amount of seconds (like 6 times within 10 seconds for example) the ECU (DME) will transmit any fault codes by blinking the service engine light. Something like blink 3 times, short pause, blink 1 time, short pause, blink 2 times, long pause for code 312. I know BMWs of this era do it. Has anyone tried this on their 964?

I want to but my engine is out so I don't really want to turn anything on right now.

Bill Wagner has the procedure posted on his Rennlist Website. You can do the same thing with a non-obd2 993 but the codes are different.

Do you know your production #?

I don't believe that my '90 C2 has the feature - it was #2010 off the assembly line.

My '90 C2 did not have this feature when I bought it in 2001 (DME 964 618 124 01). After hearing about this capability and researching a bit, I bought an EPROM chip from a 964 618 124 03 DME for $15 on eBay, put it in my DME unit and the function worked perfectly. (Gas pedal to the floor while turning the key to dash indicator on position, wait 'til the check engine light blinks, foot off the gas and count the blinks).

I'm not sure what models or years got the -03 DME but I understand it was originaly a California requirement to have some self diagnosis capability.

Cars originally destined for California in 1990 had the CEL installed. I'd think that some of them have since made their way out of that state, so it's possible you might find one anywhere now.
