Its only been 9 years(!), but thanks for this suggestion. I previously tried and failed to get the lower connection of the hood shocks off, but with this screw driver, success. The dental floss tip upthread to secure the upper clip also was used to great effect. :-)

One small improvement you can make when replacing your front hood shocks is to disconnect the upper pins connecting the shocks to the hood. This would enable the hood to get more vertical and give you a slightly better view of prying open the spring on the lower ball socket.
