That will be a great contact.
I'm actually going to see the car before I get it shipped.
I'm trying to come up with a way to drive it for a couple of days in LA without valid plates? I'm thinking non registered Ontario plates?
Any ideas?
Thanks again PC2 for the contact info..

Your new car should come with current registration & plates unless it's a "non-op". Have fun in LA but make sure your insurance covers the new car in LA.

Do you know any car dealers in Ontario you can borrow some dealer plates from?
I drove my car back from Ontario to NB last year using dealer plates I borrowed - my insurance company knew about it and covered me with no problem.

Johnny... In the US (In most states)... There are tags called "Drive Away" plates that are only for transporatation. You could check with your DMV up there to see if such a thing exists in Canada.

Thanks again for all the input.
I now have to go to Paris for the weekend and can't make it to LA.
Maybe just after Christmas I'll give it another go.
I'm going to send the cheque to the lienholder however the owner tells me he owes more than the sale price! I also would like to get the car out of the current owners hands as soon as I pay for it.
I'll need a place in LA to store it for a week or so.

If I can help , just let me know , if its all legal , I could go snag it for you and park it at my place .
Highway 1 from LA to Santa Cruz in a C2 cab would be a vacation trip .

My input is worth very little however, I’ve been following your purchase with its trials and tribulations,. Are you sure that, perhaps these obstacles may not be in fact a form of writings, that are on the wall or, front left fender?.. A long term love affair usually starts on the right foot and forms a solid foundation,. Take your time, allow your partner to be, the opportunity to find you also,. Perhaps this Porsche 911/964, is in Canada already,. Love is a two way street, look both ways when crossing it,. Have fun in Paris, especially by night..

Thank you Marc, i do value all members opinions.
The problem in Canada right now is the carry over of the week dollar.
The current used car prices in Canada are double the price in the US.
So with the dollar now at 85 cents it makes more sense to buy a car in the US.
I did see a 95 993 in Toronto for $35000 I offered $30000 but lucky for me they turned me down!

Then all systems go !!..You’ve obviously done your homework, you’ve made the efforts to find your Lady, and it sounds as if she’s waiting for You!! That, my Friend is Love!!.. Have the Best Drive of your life home, stay in contact, and send Wedding Photographs when finally they are developed, back home in Canada,.. Good luck, and Merry Christmas to both of you, what’s her name?.... Marc

Just an update to my current crazy idea. ie ebay purchase!
I just found out that the credit union that holds the title will not clear title for a period of 10 days after they receive the cheque. I therefore cannot get the car across the border because the title will not be clear. I'm thinking that I could use a go between and send them the cheque and when the PO presents the car he gets the cheque.
Does this sound reasonable?

Your go between should be a Escrow company that is experienced with dealing with this type of transaction. Unfortunately I don't have any to recommend but others may. Good luck with the purchase.

HI John,
The credit union probably holds the title because the check is a personal one and needs time to make sure it's clear. How about if you send them a Certified or Bank check, or arrange a money transfer right to them.

John, I hope you checked out this site prior to purchase! It covers all the details and you can even call them for more info. FWIW, if the car is more than 15 yrs old you have a lot less to worry about when importing. (Mine was 15 years 2 months - something I was intentionally looking for and kind of shocked the customs agent when I showed him the manufacture date on the title).
